This is a great book. I was worried that Autry would be soft on bad behavior. Just the opposite. He shows how a servant leader must confront the challenges of leadership head on. No mamby pamby stuff here. Highly recommend!

I would recommend this book to others, especially those interested in leadership and organizational psychology. It provides a different viewpoint on leadership that many in our largest companies have embraced, but is often not felt at the lower levels of organizations. While discussing many of the topics that face the modern manager, Autry provides interesting and innovative ways, based on his own personal experiences as well as other servant leaders, to deal with those who work underneath and around you. Organizations have evolved to have more flexible work arrangements and personal interactions. With the continual improvements in IT systems and the fact that more people are working remotely or from home, organizational management is paramount to continue improvement in effectiveness. Many effective leaders, including Howard Schultz, Jack Canfield, and other Fortune 500 CEOs, have adopted this method.
James Autry also connects many of his personal beliefs with the spirit of servant leadership. While being a leader who expects the best out of those who work for him, James also understands the value of helping people through difficult times and understanding the circumstances that life brings upon us. He also understands that people within our organizations are not just coworkers, but those that we need to service as friends and people. Each faces their own difficulties related to family, alcoholism, or any other number of problems and those deserve compassion not judgment. This treatment not only helps those in difficulty, it can create one of the most loyal and hardworking teams that exist in an organization.
