Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Family therapist, lawyer, and mother Rolfe here presents seven rules for building good relationships between parents and kids: listening, faith, modeling, expression, celebration, attention, and letting go. Her advice is both basic and thoughtful, advocating giving your child fresh air and fresh food, spending quality time together even while doing ordinary adult things, and celebrating small occasions royally. Above all, Rolfe advocates faith?never giving up on your child. Based on a mix of case histories from her practice, her own experience, and research results, this is a very good guide to basic, commonsense child rearing. Highly recommended.?Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, Pa.

What are the successful parenting secrets which build attitudes and beliefs and influence parenting choices? This covers the basics; from setting limits and inspiring learning to attending to a child's blossoming spiritual needs and ability to show good judgement. If you are, like me, a parent who has become confused and insecure about parenting because of the deluge of contradictory books on the subject, you will be delighted to read this simple and direct approach to improving your skills--and your confidence in yourself. I especially like the idea of beginning by having faith in your child--a deep, abiding faith that he/she will be OK. I loved this book and recommend it to seasoned parents, as well as new parents.

I bought this book a few years ago and loved it when I first read it and now I've just picked it up again and can't wait to re-read it. Her first chapter is on maintaining faith that our children will grow up just fine and that we are doing a good job parenting them. That our faith in them carries them and allows them to believe in themselves. I often don't believe that my child will "turn out" alright and I often don't think I'm doing a good job, so this is a needed chapter for me. The next one is also great as it focuses on specific ways of paying attention to our children. Just overall a great parenting book that respects and appreciates kids and doesn't attempt to change them, but rather to look for whether their basic needs are being met and emphasizes listening to them, among other things. I can't believe there is only one other review of this book. It's a gem.
