Johannes Brahms is above all a composer of chamber music and over his long career he penned about twenty-five major compositions in the genre, many of which rank among the best music ever written, another tranche of which consist of excellent works not quite at that elevated level and... then there is the 3rd Quartet in B-flat (1876). I really shouldn't make light of this as Brahms' tremendous ability and achievement has given me so much. But if I had to name one individual chamber music composition as the worst from the master, this quartet would be the easy choice.

Whatever I may think of the quartet, this 1998 disc from the Shanghai Quartet is well-done and worthwhile. The better of the two compositions presented here - don't ask me, ask Brahms, who was very proud of this opus -- is undoubtedly the F-major Quintet (1882), a three-movement work in which the standard quartet is joined by a viola. In my experience, that creates balance problems in performance, with the higher registers becoming too dense and clotted, an issue which the Shanghai Quartet have worked out very well, for which they deserve full credit. In fact, I have a number of performances of this quintet and I don't really like any of them. While the Shanghai's performance isn't a great one, it is certainly a capable effort with moments of great beauty. It would be my preferred pick if you are looking for a recording of this work. Particularly noteworthy is the ascending transition figure right after the second subject of the opening Allegro - the Shanghai Quartet makes this a very exciting moment. There really are many good performance touches throughout the disc.

I heard the Shanghai Quartet play the 3rd quartet in concert and was very favorably impressed. That's why I bought the Delos CD. The digital CD captures most, but not all, of the beauty of that live performance. The quintet is also well-played, but I continue to prefer the Boston Symphony Chamber Ensemble CD performance. I also prefer the Nonesuch recording, despite the fact that it is derived from an analog tape.
