5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful CD
This CD is truly fantastic. Their music is fresh, funky yet chilled. There isn't one track I don't like. They are the best, most original new band I've heard in ages.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ah, that classic meeting of old Shanghai and... Brooklyn
So, take 1 part Chinese instrumental music from the 1920s-1950s, add some "Beats" and digital editing... okay, I'm with you so far... and then have black women sing over it in English, all R&B diva like, u kno wat I'm sayin', mmm-hmm... uh, what?

I understand the remixing and mash-ups projects of late. Some of the Verve Remixed stuff was good. The Shanghai...

This album is amazing. Perfect for lounges and relaxing time.
My favorites are: Miss Shanghai, Babylon of the Orient, Lu Xun, Avenue Joffre, Pudong New District and The Bund... Pretty much all the tracks. :)

This album has such a sophisticated sound and it's very creative. I haven't heard a fusion of music like this before. Truly East meets West. I love all the tracks. If you have the chance, make sure you listen to the Reinterpretations album. They've re-recorded a bunch of tracks from the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple and exotic blend, June 8, 2007
I heard a sample track of this CD from a friend of mines and love the blend of traditional music, jazz, hip hop and easy listening to this CD. I am glad to have gotten this CD and am waiting for another sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I heard one song and i was sold., December 25, 2011
By

In summary, it is an excellent excellent album and i highly recommend it to anyone. It's amazing, creative, refreshing, and new.

So i was listening to Pandora. I generally listen to lounge music when i'm chillen because it can be relaxing and not distracting. While listening to Pandora, the song "babylon of the occident" came on, I heard it and had to have it.

I went to youtube to listen to more of this song as well as others from their album. After i went through numerous songs without finding one i didn't like, I immediately got this album. I love every single song on it. The instrumentals are amazing, I can not get enough of it. I listen to it all the time, in the car or at home chillen. The weird thing about it is that it can be relaxing but at the same time get you going if you are in the gym.

It is a good mix of electronica, hip hop, pop, and jazz as the description states. When i heard the band name i was a bit hesitant because i thought of old slow chinese music. Not that there is anything wrong with it at all, it's just something i wouldn't want to listen to all the time in the car or at home. The stuff that shanghai restoration project puts out though, is nothing of the sort. I could definitely listen to it over and over again without getting sick of it.

Go to youtube and check out some of their stuff since there is no song samples or previews on amazon, then come back and purchase this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Fusion of Chinese Traditional Music, November 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Have you ever imagined blending Chinese traditional music with jazz, hip-hop, and electronica? Well, that's what the Shanghai Restoration Project did, and it's very awesome! Dave Liang, who is Chinese American and the producer for this group, was inspired by the Shanghai Jazz bands of 1930s when he visited Shanghai in 1997. So when you listen this album, you feel the strong Chinese traditional atmosphere and yet very unique sounds. There are various vocalists and very catchy and addicting electronic beats. The only one thing I don't like is that lyrics are simple and too repetitive, but it is okay since no one had ever tried this kind of music before. Highly recommended whoever likes listening Asian musics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth, July 20, 2008
My kind of music. My co worker first heard this when it came pre-loaded on a new MP3 player. He let me listen to it because he thought that I would like it. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fusion music at its best!, May 14, 2007

Extending across the genres of jazz, pop, dance, and hip-hop, The Shanghai Restoration Project is a unique offering that blends Chinese traditional instruments with English vocals and Western styling. Bold artistic statements like this are a sign of the future, and really reflect Dave Liang's visionary style and Chinese American background. Avenue Joffre and the various incarnations of Miss Shanghai are my picks for the best "hits" out of the lot, but all of the tracks are particularly well done. A definite buy for anyone who enjoys innovative music!
