Alexandra Stoddard's newest book could just as easily been called "Shared Wisdom" since its "simple truths" are not only applicable to mothers and daughters but to fathers, sons, husbands, parents, and friends.

I have been reading Alexandra Stoddard's books for years. Their short essay format makes them a great way to spend a few moments to get inspired, to think, to grow. Alexandra often writes about order and balance and grace and beauty, and how to apply these concepts to live an authentic and, thus, a beautiful life. Neither preachy nor didactic, Alexandra's essays show a person comfortably grounded in her sense of values. The essays simply and clearly convey practical observations and approaches to dealing with the complex - like disappointments - to the overlooked - like the need for a time-out for self-care.

In "The Shared Wisdom of Mothers and Daughters," Alexandra returns to some of her perennial themes: appreciating nature's beauty, choosing to be an optimist, avoiding unnecessary distractions. She also expands on some favorite subjects: to be strong, to never stop learning, to not fear change, to make travel a priority. While her topics are familiar, with each book she distills and polishes them to a more gem-like shine. It is clear that Alexandra has not stopped learning and getting better and better. And, she encourages us to do the same.

THE SHARED WISDOM of MOTHERS and DAUGHTERS is the latest of more than two dozen books written by "life" philosopher Alexandra Stoddard. I've been reading Ms. Stoddard for over twenty years now and am always eager to get a glimpse into the quiet, purpose-directed world she has created for herself. Her strong focus on eternal values--the preciousness of time, the importance of personal connection, the beauty that surrounds us even in the toughest times--never fails to give me a boost. Whenever I feel my life spinning out of control, I find myself returning to these books and their central theme--BREATHE! Unlike some of the author's fans, I am not crazy about her short-form essays. I'm greedy. I want more. This book in particular, being so brief, left me a little hungry. Yet, what there is of it is beautiful. Like a bite-sized piece of dark chocolate. Or a single rose.

It's been fascinating to follow Alexandra Stoddard's writing career - one can see the evolvement of her soul as she devoted more of her attention to "the things that matter" and turned away from "over the top" decorating. I have followed her since book #1. What a journey! Learning how to simplify, to treasure the most "ordinary miracles" - a beautiful flower, a simple Zen writing room - with just the "right" amount of memories around to stimulate her....this is the journey we are all taking as we evolve. I've also enjoyed her spiritual development - embracing both Eastern and Western traditions to help her become as whole as is humanly possible. And I love that she does not care about perfection - which is a myth and a waste of time and energy. Alexandra - you have been an inspiration to so many of your readers for so many years. I am filled with gratitude! Please keep writing!!

Once again, Alexandra Stoddard has graced us with a little gem of a book. I found myself savoring every page, pausing to meditate on her wisdom. Alexandra's words encourage thoughtfulness and mindfulness. I am reminded to slow down and enjoy the journey. My 3 daughters will definitely benefit from this book, too.
