About the Author

Lydia Millet: Lydia Millet is the author of many novels for adult readers, including My Happy Life, which won the PEN-USA Award for Fiction in 2003, and Oh Pure and Radiant Heart, about the scientists who designed the first atomic bomb, which was shortlisted for the UK’s Arthur C. Clarke Prize. She has taught at Columbia University and the University of Arizona and now works as a writer and editor at an endangered-species protection group called the Center for Biological Diversity.

More About the Author

Lydia Millet is a novelist and short-story writer known for her dark humor, idiosyncratic characters and language, and strong interest in the relationship between humans and other animals. Born in Boston, she grew up in Toronto and now lives outside Tucson, Arizona with her two children, where she writes and works in wildlife conservation. Sometimes called a "novelist of ideas," Millet won the PEN-USA award for fiction for her early novel My Happy Life (2002); in 2010, her story collection Love in Infant Monkeys was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2008, 2011, and 2012 she published three novels in a critically acclaimed series about extinction and personal loss: How the Dead Dream, Ghost Lights, and Magnificence. June 2014 will see the publication of her first book for young-adult readers, Pills and Starships -- an apocalyptic tale of death contracts and climate change set in the ruins of Hawaii.

Cara's brother, Jax, is at "smart kid" camp and her mother has gone missing. Cara is unsettled about the camp for gifted children so when she receives an emergency texted message from her brother she collects her 2 best friends (Hayley and Jaye) and they head off to rescue Jax. It does seem that Cara's feelings were correct and the camp is using the children for their own purposes and is also a front for her mother's organization.

The Shimmers in the Night is an enjoyable, young, children's story that can even be enjoyed by adults. It does seem that Lydia Millet has an anti-development message and its effects on the environment, but she goes about sharing her views in a such an imaginative and articulate way it did make this a very good story. The Shimmers int he Night was definitely written with the younger reader in mind.

This copy of The Shimmers in the Night was given to me by Goodreads First Reads and Small Beer Press in exchange for an honest review.

My daughter reads both books in the series over and over again, so I've started giving them as gifts to other children in the 9-12 age group, and they are a bit hit. We hear that there is one more coming and we are really looking forward to it.
