Book Description

Noir… horror… satire…

"The 1st Short Story Collection" by Anonymous-9 contains 11 of her very best noir, horror and satire. Winner of Spinetingler Magazine's Best Short Story on the Web 2009, nominated again in 2010. New York Times bestselling author T. Jefferson Parker praised her crazy-good sense of humor. But that touch of humor comes with an edge and a bite. The collection reflects Anonymous-9's hardboiled vision of a dark and violent world. This is a collection of her award-winning fiction for the very first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darling, Don't You Monkey With The Monkey October 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first came across the story "Hard Bite" in Beat to a Pulp a while back, so I snagged this collection fast when I saw it was up here on Amazon (promising myself I'd knock out the stories over a couple lunch hours). But, if you can believe it, the short story "Hard Bite" wasn't enough monkey action for me. In fact, it was exactly one monkey story too short, so I was relieved when her amazing "Return of the Night Of The Living Dead Monkey From Sunset Boulevard" showed up on The Flash Fiction Offensive last week, and even more relieved when I realized it was in this collection (which I was only halfway through). Is there anything better than realizing you already own a great piece of fiction? Maybe. But the point of all this is, yes, she may live in witness protection, but she's a mad ape connoisseur. And there's great stuff in here with nary a monkey in sight. That's called range, and she's got it. Seriously, this is a savage beauty of a debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anonymous but Outrageous September 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
If you like your genre on the gonzo side, then you need to get on board the Anonymous 9 train. She's a mysterious writer with an imagination way off there in the ether. I published one of her stories on PLOTS WITH GUNS (wild ride it was, too) and was amazed at the number of responses I got. People loved it. I read more of her pieces after that and found them all equally twisted. Glad to see them together here. Pick this one up.

4.0 out of 5 stars As if Philip K. Dick wrote crime fiction April 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
That was a nice, little shotgun read. HARD BITE is one of the best, most original short stories I've ever read. The wheelchair-bound narrator's voice, his twisted sense of humor, the hyperreality he lives in. This is really a perfect story.

Not all the stories live up to him. Some are very predictable and their very short form doesn't help that very problem. You know, if you start with a premise that usually have a certain type of ending, if the story is short, the ending will probably be what you expected.

There are other stories that punched me in the balls. Not as hard as HARD BITE, but more than your usual short anyway. TEQUILA SPIKE, EATING THE DEFICIT and M-N-S all stood out on their own and brought a little more happiness to my life! Great collection to pick up if you have two hours ahead of you, waiting for your flight or something. Anonymous 9 has a crazy, tunneled vision of reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Leonard & Faust have competition. November 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought it was unfair to read these stories so soon after "When the Women Come Out to Dance" by Elmore Leonard. There were a lot of similarities in the style, subject matter, the shock of what people can do to each other & how they can justify it in their own minds. Leonard is a well known expert at it while Anonymous-9 is a fairly new author. How could she possibly hope to compete? Damn, but she did!

The one HCC novel I read that was written by a woman, Christa Faust, was as noir & hard case as anything I've ever read by a guy. In some ways, it was even rougher & darker. She, like Anonymous-9, write far better leading women than most men do. They are sometimes worse than I want to imagine & they do men just as well. Set that into a some very creative situations & the results were wonderful. Definitely an author to pursue!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bite August 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A collection of noir/crime stories that really push the borders of the genre forward. Many of these are award winning or award nominated tales, and the awards are deserved. Definitely not the same old, same old stuff. Full of fresh, if twisted, tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars I know who you are, Anonymous-9 June 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I know who Anonymous-9 is. She is the reincarnation of O'Henry. But something went very wrong, and his mind became twisted and dark and ,well, female. But he did preserve his sense of justice.

Now kick in a sprinkling of Poe , and there you are.

Write some more stories, please....

Chilling to the bone, each story is more twisted than the last. Anonymous-9 artfully captures the demented minds of each of her characters. Every murderous, or deranged psychopath, is beautifully justified in their cause. With one foot in reality and the other in a disturbed altered dimension, these stories are both believable and chilling. Each short is full of twists and turns that only the creative mind of Anonymous-9 could predict. Hard Bite is a set of both fun and tasteful edge of your seat thrillers. Definitely recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisted and Twisty November 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The first piece of writing that I ever read by Anonymous-9 was Claw Marks, a clever and nasty look at love and carnage, at the then new ezine A Twist Of Noir.

After that, more and more of her stories kept appearing across the interweb; Thuglit gave us Tequila Spike- a brilliantly hard-boiled payback story; M-N-S(n) Murder-necrophilia-suicide was at Plots With Guns and Beat To A Pulp gave us the award winning revenge story of a boy and his monkey, Hard Bite.

And there were lots more twisted, twisty tales, too and they're all jam packed into this fantastic collection of blackly comic and brilliantly imaginative dark fiction stories -HARD BITE AND OTHER SHORT STORIES BY ANONYMOUS-9.

Some, like Return of the Night of the Living Dead Monkey from Sunset Boulevard and M-N-S are wild yarns that are laugh out loud funny; others -The Master Bedroom-are seriously chilling but all are exceptionally well crafted works of great imagination.

And what could be nicer than that?

More About the Author

Anonymous-9 adopted this pseudonym in case her work wasn't "accepted." When the stories started getting nominated for awards, that fear was put to rest, but the pen-name stuck. She was signed by crime e-publisher BLASTED HEATH in 2012. She is known for rewriting every story at least a hundred times before releasing it. Recognitions include Spinetingler Magazine's Best Short Story on the Web 2009, nominated for the same award again in 2010, a Thriller Award nomination in the Short Story category (by a first-round judging committee), and two nominations for the Derringer Award, sponsored by the Short Mystery Fiction Society. THE FIRST SHORT STORY COLLECTION, an e-book, features 11 of her best noir, horror and satire. HARD BITE, the novel, will be released by Blasted Heath as an e-novel on October 25th, 2012. Anonymous-9 lives in Los Angeles and loves to speak or conduct e-signings at gatherings and events. Travel is always an option. Drop a line at anonwrite9@gmail.com
