Biography

BEFORE THE SHOW - "Everyone gets in their own little mode. Especially if we've been off the road for a while. Everyone goes on their own. We're a little quiet. We get real touchy - like at soundcheck we might get mad if something doesn't go right. We want everything to be perfect."

Tension is high. The show is about to begin. R&B mega group, Jodeci is about to ... Read more in Amazon's Jodeci Store

First, I admit ... I'm biased. I've been a Jodeci fan from the jump. The Hailey Brothers sound like Sam Cooke after too many drinks and cigars. But their tone invites you to sing along once you've dropped your inhibitions. And Dalvin and Devante concoct some of the most rugged, pimped-out R&B grooves I've ever heard (even if they do get kinda formulaic). But you have to be in a Jodeci frame-of-mind to appreciate the artistry of this album. I was in a pimped-out, playa mindstate all year in '95-'96 (my college years), which is why "The Show..." still defines that time for me.
I remember reading a Vibe article in '95 before this joint dropped in which Jodeci said they were inspired to get into the music biz by the career of Prince. Suprise, suprise. But while Prince lyrically romances women before seducing them, this album shows how Jodeci preferred to tap directly into a woman's innate freaky nature and exploit it to their own ends. "The Show, The After Party.." is one long seduction suite. It's purpose: to psychologically wear a woman down by track 12 and wear your mattress out by track 19.
Personally, I can't see why Jodeci fans were dissappointed with "The Show." Everyone saw this coming after the unbridled lust of "Diary of a Mad Band." Musically, the album is noteworthy. Devante has a genius for taking very simple beat architecture and decorating it with enough futuristic synthesizer and kick snare to give each song an identity. The groove he hits with that guitar loop in Freek-n-You is as intoxicating as anything I've heard in R&B. K-Ci and Jo-Jo squeeze every last drop of soul out of each lyric (as always). And Dalvin does whatever he does very well too (grin).
Don't get me wrong.

DEVANTE SWINGS SHOW HIS TRUE MUSICAL GENIUS. START THE CD ON TRACK 11 AND JUST LET IT GO. KICK BACK AND CHILL, PERHAPS CLOSE YOUR EYES. I GO BACK TO THIS ALBUM EVEN THOUGH ITS LIKE A DECADE OLD CUZ THE BEATS AND ARRANGEMENTS ARE unparalleled! THE BEATS, THE LYRICS, THE HARMONY. THIS IS PURE R&B AT ITS BEST. COME BACK JODECI!!!

Boy was I surprised as a high schooler to hear track # 13. Haha! There are too many interludes on here but as far as song quality goes, these are good tunes. If you want a sexual-horn dog CD, buy this one. "Get On Up" and "Love You For Life" are really the only ~non-sexual~ tunes on here.

This CD from start to finish is the best Jodeci CD's and one of the best albums ever. Don't get me wrong, "Diary Of A Mad Band" had the best string of songs from tracks 1-6 but this is more balanced even with the interludes. My man Louis from Southfield, MI could not have explained it any better. Jodeci was basically bringing you into their living and showing what they may endured on their tour and what some artists do. The album gives you a timeline from the start of the evening when things are starting to begin till the we-hours of the morning. When you play any of these songs at a party, I bet half of the women just get to humpin' around and going crazy. This is a great road album if you are traveling. Another thing about this CD is that it is starting to show you Jodeci starting to branch off into their own agendas. DeVante is a freekin genious-Top 5 of producers in my category(Tone Capone, DJ Quik, Mike Dean, QDIII). This CD is a straight lovers CD, I know that a lot back in our junior year of high school to senior year of college can relate to this CD and appreciate it. A lot of babies have been produced from this CD. All I can say is this CD is dope!!!

It's been 9 summers since it dropped...and this $hit is still BANGIN!!! These cats have out done themselves on this one. The fact that I heard this CD pourin' out of some young brothas SUV sittin' on 24"s (spinnin') at Prairie View A&M in 2004 is true testament. And this cat had to be only 9 or 10 years old when it orginally came out. For this album to carry over to these new soldiers speaks for itself...sounding just as good today as it did back in 95'...(x-cuse the redundancy). Aside of the dialogue and interludes (which was cool dont get me wrong)...the album started off BUMPIN!!! and the BUMP maintained throughout the whole damn thing...even with the slow $hit! A lotta of BASS and heavy Bottom, jus' the way I like it. DeVantes' a mothaf*ckin GENIOUS. It has so much BUMP its gotten me good and plenty...even messed around and made a baby off this. I played that CD till it got all scratched up...now I gotta go out buy 2 new ones...one for back up jus' incase. Too bad these cats fall off. Hate That!!!!

I've been a Jodeci fan for 10 years and this album is just superb. Each Jodeci album thus far has been better than the last. This album is just like Doggystyle you put it on at a party people listen this is classic. All three Jodeci albums have been burning my cd player because i listen to them constantly. Devante and Dalvin produced the Haileys with perfect songs to sing to. Devante is quite possibly the greatest singer songwriter producer in the last 15 or 20 years everything he touces goes gold or platinum. My favorite songs are "Freek n You" "Can We Flo" "Get on Up" Bring on Da Funk" "Time And Place." Put on "Freek n You" and girls will do pretty much anything. Thank you Jodeci. If you buy one album in the near future buy this one!!!
