Book Description

Over the summer of 2013 Egypt witnessed its worst anti-Christian violence in centuries, with dozens of churches burned down by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. In Syria Islamist gunmen occupy the faith’s holiest site, while the Civil War has given Sunni extremists the chance to empty Christian villages through ‘religious cleansing’. And ten years after the fall of Saddam, Iraq’s pre-war Christian population has fallen from a million to 200,000 and now barely clings on. Yet this greatest and most tragic of historical events of the 21st century has been met with near apathy in the West. In The Silence of Our Friends: The Extinction of Christianity in the Middle East, Spectator blogger and Catholic Herald deputy editor Ed West looks at the tragedy that has befallen Christian communities in the region where the faith first took hold, and asks whether there is anything the west can do, or if it will soon be the last Christmas in the land of St Paul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very compelling January 25, 2014

This is a short work but it is well researched and very informative. My hope and prayer is that its message will be heeded. May religious and political leaders throughout the West do what they can to bring attention to the plight of Christians in the Middle East.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and infuriating February 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An excellent summary of the sectarian violence perpetrated against Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East while the West yawns and turns a blind eye, more interested by the plight of gays in Sochi and the size of your carbon footprint.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Summary for the Uniformed American Church March 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a decades long Voice of the Martyrs supporter, I was not unaware of what has been happening to Christian communities globally, but this book helped shed light on some other minor little-known faith communities and some of the historical relationships between them with a good county by country summary of recent events in the Muslim dominated regions of the Middle East. If you want to maintain currency - I recommend following/supporting Voice of the Martyrs or similar organizations, as this book can only represent a snapshot in time. This book can serve, however, as an eye opener for the vast number of uninformed American Christians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painful Knowledge March 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Perhaps if more people knew the harsh realities many people of faith endure, many more of us would pray and/or seek ways to help alleviate such terrible suffering and injustice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important Information February 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm stunned that as a Nation we haven't talked about this and that the real impact of our wars has been the extermination of historic Christian communities. What a tragedy.

Please share this book with others.
