Princess Hsi-Ling Chi has heard tales of a sleeping dragon and ancient gods residing in the Holy Mountains beyond her father’s palace. But when she emerges from the gates for the first time, she is not afraid. She has with her a magical thread unraveled from a tiny cocoon that dropped into the Empress’s teacup, and she knows it will lead her back to the palace garden. But she is very far from home when she notices that the thread has broken, and that she is lost. How will she find her way back? And will the secret of silk be lost forever?

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning picture book! February 25, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the most stunning children's books I've seen in quite a while!

I am very particular about my picture book acquisitions, but this one stood out -- and quickly made its way to my art book collection. Not only is it exquisitely illustrated and beautifully designed, but the tale is well told and kept my three year old daughter entertained right up to its conclusion.

Based on an ancient Chinese legend, the story takes the reader on a journey with the spirited princess Hsi-Ling Chi. The princess sees a cocoon drop into a cup of tea and ties the ensuing silken strand around her waist. There the string gradually unravels as she bravely travels to the Holy Mountains and almost runs into a giant spider. She is in fear of losing her way when an encounter with a magnificent dragon results in the breaking of her string. Her adventure takes her to an old man who helps her unlock the secrets of silk. In the end, her father is delighted with his daughter's discovery and declares that all royal garments be made of silk. From then on, Hsi-Ling Chi is known as "the Silk Princess."

Every elegant full page spread is a delight that perfectly sets the visual tone for this beautifully told tale.
Highly recommended!

If you enjoy this book, I'd like to also suggest The Weaving of a Dream by Marilee Heyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weaving A Tale Can take Many Routes April 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If you read of a Chinese Legend it is possible to come across endless versions. This person has at least thirty versions of "The Weaving Maiden & the Cowherd" Even the title changes. One needs to consider the horrific loss of much that had been written. The story is not meant to be logical. The white
print may well be symbolic. White is the color of death, the spider web is white in which the princess came close to falling prey. It is questionable to say what the facial features were in a legendary time. The artist illustrator, writer seems to have done adequate research to present his version. It is doubtful some thought did not go into the use of partial white lettering. Consider the legend of discovery as well as giving away were both done by princesses.
