Book Description

April 5, 2011
Bestseller Luanne Rice returns with a novel as timeless as the sea on which it's set.

From the beloved New York Times bestselling Luanne Rice comes a heartwarming yet heart-wrenching portrait of three far-flung sisters who come home to Martha's Vineyard one last time. Their mother's beach house is the only place any of them ever found true happiness and they need to begin the difficult process of letting go. Memories of their grandmother, mother, and their Irish father, who sailed away the year Dar turned twelve, rise up and expose the fine cracks in their family myth-especially when a cache of old letters reveals enough truth to send them back to their ancestral homeland.

Transplanted into the unfamiliar, each sister sees life, her heart, and her relationship to home in a new way. But how do they let go of a place that contains the complicated love of their imperfect family? Without the house, where will they be together?

The novel is a season on Martha's Vineyard; a mission to Ireland; a cast of friends, including one wildly off-the-grid Zen genius; passionate love in the surf; and three very different sisters with lives filled with beauty, sorrow, and deep love they'd never been quite sure they could trust. The Silver Boat is Luanne Rice at her very best, complete with her singular talent for capturing a family in all its flawed complexity.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Dar McCarthy is expecting her sisters, Delia and Rory, to join her in Marthas Vineyard for a final visit to the family home before it has to be sold for taxes. Each of the sisters has taken a different path, and Dar is the only one remaining on the island. The house has been in the family for generations, and as the sisters reunite to pack up mementos, they broach the one subject that has haunted them, the disappearance of their father when they were young. Michael was an Irish immigrant shipbuilder, while their mother came from a prestigious New England family. Michael always maintained that his family had a land grant from the king of England on Marthas Vineyard. Driven by the need to prove his worth, he sailed to Ireland to look for the original deed. After unearthing love letters between her parents, Dar and her sisters go to Ireland on their own quest. Popular Rice, in her mellifluous style, captures the essence of family and sisterhood as each character deals with love and loss. --Patty Engelmann

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Luanne Rice Winner! April 8, 2011

Time after time, novel after novel, Luanne Rice proves that she knows how to write about families in all shapes and sizes. Her newest is no exception. The McCarthy sisters and their families and their stories spring to life in The Silver Boat. One warning - the book is addictive and once I started it, I had trouble stopping.
I highly recommend this book as a great read. Enjoy! I sure did.

2.0 out of 5 stars disapointed April 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have always been a fan of Luanne Rice but I must say I was just plain bored and disapointed by this new book. The author focused more on Dar's cartoon charactor than developing the actual charactors of the story.I am sad to say the story was also very predictable. No depth here. This book left me cold.

Disjointed writing. Characters were not fully developed. Read more like an outline of a story than a novel. Had potential for a good story but skirted the story for unrelated trivia that detracted. Was disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story
The story itself was very good but I believe it could have been written better. Things just fell into place a little too easy.
