There seems to be a worldwide hunger for a greater spiritual understanding and connection. This may be why I've read Silver Cord several times and give copies of it to anyone who seems the least bit interested.
Silver Cord is a persuasive book because it describes human nature within a spiritual framework that differs from those espoused by organized religions. It was authored by Barham and Greene, clinical psychologists who have published two related books (Bridging Two Worlds and Our Spiritual Connection). All three books necessarily draw upon the authors' spiritual experiences that are as well-documented as possible.
Silver Cord describes the structure of the human personality in terms of spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical quadrants. While the latter three quadrants are common elements of mainstream psychology, inclusion of an explicitly defined spiritual quadrant is not. Oddly, most modern psychologists avoid integrating spirituality even though throughout history it has been central to the human experience. Because Barham and Greene describe this breadth of human experience, it is quite easy for readers to relate to the spiritual framework in Silver Cord. There are descriptions of the nature of the creator (i.e., the Source), souls, and universes.
Here are some of the basic tenets presented in the Silver Cord:
The Source (i.e., God) is energy that creates energy. Some refer to the Source's energy pattern as Heaven. The Source creates only positive energies and universal laws that guide them. It is benign and not all-knowing. The Source created two other universes that are designed to evolve so that the Source Itself evolves.
There are three universes that co-exist: (1) the obstructed universe (physical existence known to humans through the senses and technology; three-dimensional space and linear time); (2) the unobstructed universe (energy patterns of frequencies and dimensions not commonly perceived by humans); and (3) the Source.
There are three types of energy that co-exist: (1) physical of the obstructed universe; (2) spiritual of the unobstructed universe; and (3) psychic, which binds the three universes. The "silver cord" in the title of this book refers to an energy permanence that connects the soul's spiritual energy with the body's physical energy as long as the body is alive.
Each human has a soul, which is an entity that consists of spiritual energy created by the Source and is part of the Source Itself. The soul lives forever. The soul's purpose is to evolve (thereby teaching the Source) and ultimately to return to the Source. All souls eventually re-emerge with the Source--there is no Satan or Hell or Purgatory. Souls evolve through seven levels prior to returning to the Source. There are no "lost souls" or "evil spirits".
The Source gives birth to 2, 3, or 5 souls at a time. Each soul has a male or female energy pattern and at least one of each sex is included at birth. Souls birthed together are soulmates that also return together to the Source. Soulmates assist each other during their evolution.
During its evolution, each soul at times resides in a physical body in the obstructed universe (incarnation and reincarnation) and at times resides in the unobstructed universe (discarnation and rediscarnation). Part of each soul's destiny is to develop a specialty in some aspect of art, science, or religion. Each soul "major's" in one area and "minor's" in the other two. What the soul has learned is added to the Archives of Knowledge, which is a data bank in the unobstructed universe. Because of the Archives grow, the Source expands and becomes more knowledgable, stronger and more powerful.
Prior to each incarnation, a soul develops a Government of Life, which is the purpose of and plan for the particular incarnation. A soul selects a fetus, parents, and developmental environment but enters the baby only after birth. If the baby is aborted or miscarried or dies upon birth, the soul selects a different baby to endow. The soul enters the baby through the medulla oblongata in the brain. In selecting a baby to endow, the soul is aware of the baby's genetic structure and probable physical personality structure. Physical personality structures differ in terms of introversion-extraversion and thinking-feeling dimensions.
Upon the soul entering the body of the baby, there is amnesia of the soul's experiences while discarnate and during prior incarnations. The more spiritually connected the person becomes, the more the amnesia is lessened.
The Government of Life includes living a natural, balanced, rhythmic life while in the body. Human experience involves physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of functioning that are a challenge to balance. A balanced or rhythmic life is not at all automatic owing to the universal law that humans have Free Choice. Other challenges include the Gamble of Life, which refers to accidents or random events that are part of the energy patterns created by the Source. The Source created random events so that the soul in the physical body is challenged to learn and thereby add to the Archives of Knowledge.
While incarnate, a person is nudged by one's own soul and by discarnate souls (spiritual guides) who assist in reaching the goals of the Government of Life. Spiritual guides do not include one's soulmates, although the guides might consult with them. When a message comes from one's own soul, it is referred to as intuition. When a message comes from discarnate souls, it is referred to as impingement.
Death of the physical body is a peaceful process that is celebrated in the unobstructed. Upon returning to the unobstructed universe, the soul does an objective inventory of what was learned during the last incarnation. This inventory involves a non-judgmental assessment of the degree to which the Government of Life was accomplished and assists in the decision of whether the soul will choose another incarnation. There is no punishment, guilt, or shame involved in this evaluation.
Some aspects of evolution of the soul can be learned only while incarnate, called Level One or Step One out of seven levels. Other levels of evolution involve learning while discarnate and also have a primary focus on art, science, or religion. Depending on the level, such learning involves serving as a spiritual guide for souls that are incarnate and studying the thousands of universal laws that govern the three universes. Level Seven involves creating new discoveries to be added to the Archives of Knowledge.
Once every 10 years, souls who have completed all seven levels return to the Source. The addition of new knowledge and discoveries in the Archives is evidenced on earth by impingements that result in technological advances that tend to occur about every 10 years.
The Silver Cord not only goes into clear detail about the above topics, it also shares many other teachings that are bound to peak the interest of the reader. For example, the authors describe ways individuals can learn to be more in touch with their soul, psychic energy, spirit guides, and the Source.
