Barnacle Bay is pretty much a Sims 3 neighborhood, with some extra content. Cedric  |  10 reviewers made a similar statement
There is no dvd included just an unlock code and you have to download the content. Lynn Wilson  |  4 reviewers made a similar statement
I fell for EA's trick and am a bit upset about it but it is what it is. GM  |  4 reviewers made a similar statement

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a neighborhood, not a vacation spot. March 24, 2011
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
For Sims 3 players who have the World Adventures expansion pack, the description of Barnacle Bay makes it sound like it is another adventure destination for Sims to travel to. The description makes mention of vacations several times, but this is not a vacation destination. Mentions of "uncovering the community's secrets", "campgrounds", and "relics" in this "vibrant vacation getaway" make it sound like this adds a new World Adventures-style destination. It does not. It is merely a home neighborhood. The pirate ship shown in the screenshot with the "explore new areas" caption is a rabbit-hole (a building Sims can enter, but you can't follow them - you only see the outside). There's no real new game-play here, just a different theme and layout for your basic town. It's a cute theme, but in my opinion, not remotely worth $20.

Also note: despite MANY complaints about the false advertising from many customers who thought they were buying a vacation destination and not a home neighborhood, EA has still not changed or clarified the wording of the description for this content. The description here is the same one that's been up for ages at the EA/Sims online store.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Pirate Town! October 16, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
First, all the 1-star reviews given are not a fair assessment of this new world itself. Just because people didn't read or understand that there was no actual DVD inside the case is no reason to give the actual product itself a 1 star. Just by holding the case at your local store, you can tell it is light in weight, and there is no disc inside. If you are any fan of The Sims series, you would know that this world, like any of the stand-alone worlds (i.e., Riverview and Hidden Springs) is only available for download from The Sims 3 Store online, and not on disc format.

So you take your code, enter it at the website and download Barnacle Bay. You get your world the same way as anyone else has done using Sim Points purchased from the online Sims Store. No difference at all. If fact maybe you made out better, because by redeeming your code (unlike those who just purchased using Sim Points) you get a couple extra bonus items that the others didn't get. So there's no room for complaints.

As to the world itself, if you like laid-back beach towns and pirate stories like Treasure Island or Pirates of the Caribbean, you will like Barnacle Bay. It is a beautiful world, spacious, pretty vistas, with lots of room to swap out lot sizes using the in-game world editor. If you don't like the size of the lots given, pick another size that fits or a place to put it that suits you. All the worlds are made to be rearranged and personalized if you so desire. So you can make it as adventurous and thematic as you like according to your own imagination and tastes. You are never "stuck" with it as is, and the game isn't going to play itself for you in only one way. You help make it happen your way.

The pirate clothing is fantastically done, true to character, and the objects such as the sailing ship diner and other nautical items are a real treat which lend to the jaunty pirate tone. The Sim families of Barnacle Bay are interesting and friendly (but if you don't like them, make your own), and there are some great designer houses here as well. Overall, this is a beautiful town with lots of fun new stuff for gameplay---and if you keep checking back, you just might find a secret treasure down in the hidden tomb beneath the ground on the backside of the island! I wouldn't be without this world. I'd give it 4-1/2 stars, but since I won't settle for only 4, I give it 5 stars instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Barnacle Bay! March 10, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This content has been available since the fall of 2010, the only difference is that you get a better bundle price and 2 new staircases (from what I understand). Well I'll pass on the stairs, but for Sims players that don't already have Barnacle Bay I think it is worth the money, especially since you really can not easily create your own world for your Sims to live in as you could in the Sims 2. Variety is the spice of life. Barnacle Bay is an attractive town for your Sims to live it; it has nice beaches and locations, and I like the buckaneer style clothing and new architechtural elements. It is rather dissapointing, I think, that the inhabitants of the town do not wear Pirate attire--you'd have to edit your town for that--from the advertisement you'd think that no one was wearing contemporary clothing.

One disapointing aspect is that there is not much free, developable real estate on the island. Being a pre Ambitions and Night Life addition, it does not have bars and night spots or firehouses or junk yards. You'd have to do some major demolition to be able to fit any of the Night Life's big buildings on Barnacle Bay Island. I'm not saying that it's not possible, I'm just saying that it would take much more editing than I'd care to do. When Ambitions came out, I did manager to find a place for most of the Ambitions public venues on the island, but no matter how hard I tried I could not fit them all on. If you're contented with the pre-expansion packs type of town, Barnacle Bay won't dissapoint. I just had wished EA had re-edited the town for this edition and added some fun night spots. They really could have spun this into an expansion pack making it a resort town where there were hotels, bars, other exciting leisure activities like being able to swim in the ocean again, boating and other things. I would like a tropical paradise for my sims to live in with new options.

That having been said I like it better than Riverview and it was nice to have another suburban town to play in.

Ummm... what?
Actually this includes Barnacle Bay and Buccaneer's Bounty plus new architectural items. Barnacle Bay is 1650 simpoints and Buccaneer's Bounty is 850 simpoints. So it's actually $5 cheaper on Amazon and comes with the exclusive architectural items.
