Editorial Reviews

(4-CD LP-sized box set with 24-page book) We pick up where 1949-1960 leaves off, and although the hits were growing smaller, Don was cutting some of the most strikingly original music to come out of Nashville in the early-to-mid '60s. Surely no one else in Nashville would have even contemplated recording with Los Indios Tabajaras, much less made it work. Gospel, standards, blues, and hits like Yes, I'm Hurting, Oh Such A Stranger and A Born Loser are all here.

Don Gibson , long recognized as an influential songwriter of considerable merit , is clearly the most under-rated "singer" of his .... or any generation. This collection is vastly superior to any other material currently available.... and is a testament to this claim.

They might have labeled Ray Charles, The Genius, based on the song I Can't Stop Loving You, and the Ray Charles Country Album which it was on, but remember, Don Gibson wrote it with no more than a 2nd grade education. According to the booklet that comes with this box set and the other two, he came in from school one day when he was 8 years old and in the second grade, and told his mama that school was a waste of time and he wasn't going back. He didn't. (I hate to tell you what would have happened to me if I came in the house and told my mama that; in ANY grade. But then I was NO genius. I refused to dissect a frog in Science Class in High School and when the teacher said to me "If you don't dissect that frog, I'll have to give you a failing grade." I said "give it to me 'cause I ain't dissecting no FROG." (I come from the same area as Andy Griffith, so if he can talk that way, so can I. He was a college professor before he was an actor.) If my science teacher had been my Language teacher, no doubt that he would have given me a failing grade in that as well. So, proof that I'm no genius. It also was obvious at that stage that I would not become a brain surgeon. I became something better. The wife (52 years now) of a career Navy Petty Officer and the mother of 4 of the greatest kids in the world and the grandmother of 8 and 2 grandsons-in-law. All just the most perfect people in the world. No great-grands yet, though. I'm not pushing them. I helped raise them all.Read more ›

Don Gibson is not forgotten, but he is certainly underappreciated. He was truly a master of simple, memorable songwriting. The songs just stick with you, and his voice is the same - simple, understated and soulful. I prefer this box to the Bear Family's earlier one, because here you have Gibson's style fully developed. Also, for some reason, when I put the earlier box on my computer, the sound became distorted and full of static. I can only listen to it on a cd player. It wasn't my computer or Ipod, because I tried two copies. No such problem with this collection.

I am very much a Don Gibson Fan so my review is biased in favour of this collection. Great sound and first class packaging.
This set of disc's contained all the tracks I wanted. The audio transfer to CD is excellent. Highly recommended

I'm going out on a limb and hope my review gets at the top of the list. These other reviews, which are mostly bad, are NOT for this 4CD Box Set of Don Gibson's music. So pay no attention to the 3 and 4 stars. This box set deserves 5+ stars. Don Gibson was a brilliant songwriter although he had no more than a grade school education. He also had a unique singing voice. It was beautiful on those soulful ballads he wrote and sang. And when we heard him on the radio, back in the good old days, we knew immediately it was him singing.

He doesn't deserve to have any reviews under his music be actually for any book. And I am mad about it. Just wish that there were something else I could do.
