Book Description

Zombies…

Sometimes they rise from the grave, hungering for human flesh…

Sometimes they’re created by a mad scientist intent on forming an unstoppable army of the undead…

Sometimes the zombie plague is transmitted by a horrific virus…

…and sometimes, they’re resurrected in front of millions of viewers as part of a live primetime television special.

This novel is the tale of Stanley Dabernath, zombie. A regular guy who dies, is brought back to life as a ghastly walking cadaver, and becomes the international sensation hailed by the press as The Amazing Mr. Corpse. Fame! Wealth! Groupies! Despite his ghoulish appearance, Stanley finds himself living the dream.

But in many ways, it’s harder to be a celebrity than a zombie. The suits behind Project Second Chance want to tell him how to behave in public. It’s difficult to enjoy a simple restaurant meal in peace. There’s constant pressure coming at him from all sides--not to mention that many people consider him a vile blasphemy that should be erased from existence.

And does Project Second Chance have Stanley’s best interests in mind, or is the real reason behind his reanimation something much more...sinister?

"With loads of relentless action and characters that make reading seem more like eavesdropping, THE SINISTER MR. CORPSE will have even the biggest stiffs among us laughing all the way to the grave." -- Rue Morgue

“Those expecting the typical apocalyptic world full of flesh eating corpses will quickly realize they are in for a different treat altogether. For those familiar with Mr. Strand’s popular Andrew Mayhem novels, take the witty banter, sharp one liners and laugh out loud moments, then turn it up a notch or three.” -- Horror World

5.0 out of 5 stars Strand at his horror-humor sarcastic best February 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Stanley Dabernath was not exactly what one would call a success in life: thirty-five years old, sixty thousand dollars in debt (his Demented Whackos Video business having never really taken off), recently evicted from his apartment, subsisting on a diet of Ramen noodles (stolen, at that), and reduced to swiping alcohol from his parents to use at meetings with his few remaining potential business partners.

And so a cynic might argue that Stanley's death (more spectacular than anything he ever accomplished in life - drowning in milk in a freak accident) was not really much of a loss to the world. Ah, but his death ironically gave him a second chance at life. Literally. Project Second Chance "rescued" Stanley from the morgue and, well, brought him back to life. On live TV (to record ratings).

Suddenly an international phenomenon dubbed "The Amazing Mr. Corpse" by the press, Stanley finally has the fortune and fame he always craved. Except, you know, he's a semi-rotted, kinda smelly zombie. Nevertheless, determined to make the most of it Stanley rides the wave of talk show appearances, rap video cameos, beer commercials, product endorsements (t-shirts, candy, action figures), and personal appearances that come rocketing his way. A zombie living the high life.

You'd think at this point the weird factor couldn't get ratcheted up much further, but only if you've never read a Jeff Strand book. Because it does. A lot. Throw some religious fanatics, a kidnapping and ransom, superhero-esque crime fighting, black magic, the blood of virgins, cannibalism (though is it really cannibalism if one of the parties isn't technically human?), and a good old fashioned riot into the mix and now we're really rocking! In fact, it doesn't just rock, it's downright sinister. For pure, unadulterated, foul-mouthed, off-the-wall Strand at his horror-humor sarcastic best there is nothing that comes close to The Sinister Mr. Corpse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rapid fire zombie humor July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Stanley Dabernath meets an unfortunate end in life but is given a reprieve thanks to daily injections by an organization known as Project Second Chance. To tell you much more would start spoiling the fun, but suffice to say it's an entertaining, comical read. I didn't want this to end. Purists might have trouble tagging this 'horror' because it isn't intended to be scary and yet there are some gory, suspenseful scenes. Reading this book reminded me somewhat of the first time I saw the movie Airplane! Leslie Nielson could play Stanley, the lovable, fallible zombie.

This was the fourth book I read by Strand, starting with two collaborative works, DRACULAS (4 stars) and Suckers (3 stars), then moving to his fun solo werewolf horror humor book Wolf Hunt (5 stars). The Sinister Mr. Corpse is easily a five star read for me. It's not easy mixing horrific situations with humor and not having it come across as silly, but Strand is a master craftsman at this style. Can't recommend this one highly enough to those who want a dose of smiles, laughter and gleeful page turning prose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Funny!!!! June 9, 2011

Being a fan of horror (and zombies in particular) I wasn't sure about purchasing this book. However, I am awfully glad I did as I laughed my keister off through the whole thing. Who knew you could like a zombie so much that you would actually root for him? Jeff Strand I suppose. Great book.

More About the Author

Jeff Strand was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but moved to Fairbanks, Alaska when he was six months old, so his memories of Baltimore are hazy. He grew up in the cold, where he desperately wanted to be a cartoonist. Then he wanted to make video games. Then he wanted to write movies. Actually, he still wants to do all of those things, but for now he's quite happy writing lots of demented novels.

He was nominated for the Bram Stoker Award in 2006, 2008, and 2010. His novel PRESSURE has been optioned for film; he's hoping the movie will be made soon so he can scream "My baby! What have you done to my precious baby?!?"

His novels are usually classified as horror, but they're really all over the place, from comedies to thrillers to drama to, yes, even a fairy tale (FANGBOY).

Because he doesn't do cold weather anymore, he lives in Tampa, Florida with his wife and two cats.
