From the Inside Flap

"The business environment is so uncertain that no can afford to miss a step. Some forces are out of out control–recessions, cutbacks, layoffs. But being the best we can be at our job is not. We have total control over that."
--From the Introduction of The Six Fundamentals of Success

Everyone has his or her own style at work. But if you look at the people who are successful, you'll see similarities. They always do the most important things first--they know how to prioritize. They can sum up how their company stands out from the pack in only a few minutes. They work with a sense of urgency, every day. These are the kinds of qualities and habits that never go out of style. Moreover, they are crucial to any successful career and life. By pursuing them regularly, you and your company are more likely to get ahead.

In The Six Fundamentals of Success, CEO and business consultant Stuart Levine spells out exactly how to practice the constants of business success--whether it's satisfying customers, developing strong relationships, or communicating clearly--through six fundamental principles, gained from decades of experience working with top executives. But it's the way Levine zeroes in on these fundamentals--add value, communicate well, deliver results, act with integrity, invest in relationships, and gain perspective--and brings them to life through dozens of pithy, to-the-point rules that makes the book so practical and useful. With no-nonsense lessons like "Face time counts," "Do breakfast," and "Share the good news--and the bad," Levine offers concrete examples of how to behave, respond, and motivate others.

Aimed at business people and entrepreneurs at all levels, whether they work in companies large or small, The Six Fundamentals of Success provides the smart, action-oriented guidance people need in today's challenging climate.

At the risk of sounding like I'm gushing, this is honestly one of the top 3 books I've ever read. My husband's boss recommended it to all of his managers. He had it laying on the counter for weeks unread, so I read it. I was so engrossed, I finished in one night and took away MULTIPLE tips that are both applicable in the business world AND your personal life. I bought my husband a replacement copy so my highlighting wouldn't annoy him and encouraged him to read right away. Although he's not a big book fan, he too took many tips away from the book.

It was just short of life-changing for me. There are actually more than 6 tips too -- there are sub-tips for each of the fundamentals which I found more helpful than the primary 6. On the personal side, it helped me cope through the death of my grandmother and get ready for my wedding. On the business side, it reinforced some principles I had which MY managers questioned, and gave me the courage to leave my job and apply those principles as well as new ones in a new job which I am much more happy with.

I agree with one of the other reviewers that you should replay/pull this book out again after reading to refresh on ideas, especially in new situations. If you don't get anything out of this book, I'd like to meet you as you must be quite a sage.

At my 1st staff meeting of 2004 on January 5th, I provided my "Greater New York" team a copy of "The Six Fundamentals of Success". I took them thru the book focusing on those things I thought would get everyone on the same page and insure they work as a team to meet our aggressive goal to grow our business 25% in 2004.
With only 2-hour meetings on January 5th, 6th and 7th and repeated references to the book, I have seen an incredible change in how the team is working together and is truly energized. With the book as a foundation, the team now believes we can make our budget for the year.
I would encourage every business manager to read the book, share it with your staff and then just coach and facilitate their success!
A great way to begin the year -- a must read!!

The book consists of short, pithy observations about fundamental ideas. They're good reminders, no doubt ... and really do express the basic blocking and tackling leaders ought to start with. No Ah-ha! moments, but that's OK. Buy a used book, not new. You'll feel better about the purchase. Community college or Businessess 101 university instructors: this could be a good replacement for part of your absurdly-expensive texts in business or business communications classes. Simply expressed, easily understandable.

But buy used.

This is the best career book I've read for a long long time. I am a principal of a headhunter in NJ and this book is a must read for professionals on their way up because it addresses all the relevant issues of people, process and principles.
For people who have just landed their job in a new company, "invest in relationships" is a golden rule and "make sure you add value" is another one to stick by. You will be going up the ladder! I assure you!
The book should also be named "The Six Fundamentals of a Successful Career"

I took the Dale Carnegie course and read many of their books and found this book is the updated and modern world version of Dale Carnegie's principles! It is a great book structured with some very strong fundamentals that are truly timeless!
Setback makes you stronger is the rule that I like best! I will read this book a few more times as it is such a great read!

This book is just what the Dr. ordered. Stuart's thoughts/insights, and how he made them seem so clear and concise was truly "genius". I am recommending that my senior management team read this book ASAP. I know that it will provide immediate value to our company.

I picked up this gem, after watching Levine on the Today show with Matt Lauer. Reading this book once, was not enough for me. I personally leaf through the book every few days.

The insights Levine provides are integral to every facet of my life. As a student leader on campus this book has helped me set goals, implement change, and maintain relationships. I apply these insights to my studies and everyday life. As the president of a major student organization, I can appreciate the fundamental "Communicate Up and Down, Inside and Out" for its reinforcement of the importance of constant communication among my peers. This book has saved my student organization time, money and a lot of frustration.

Levine gives an impressive amount of advice, which if followed will increase your value to an organization substantially. Many of the ideas presented seem elementary in concept, yet are often overlooked by the majority of the workforce.

I personally enjoyed the "Straight to the point" format, which Levine takes throughout the book. He explains his point and reasoning then moves on without excessive elaboration.

I will definitely review this book in the future to remind myself of the simple ideas and concepts that can increase my value substantially.
