I bought and read this book (it is a fast read) and have lost 3 pounds in 3 days. He's a wonderful writer and it's easy to read. However, weekly store shopping lists would have been nice. Re carbs: a more realistic expectation set regarding the first few days and weeks on the plan would have helped. Let's be honest: carbs--not protein--are THE KEY to preventing grumpiness and severly limiting carbs initially means there will be alot of unhappy campers. That said, I do plan to space out the carbs I am given (deviating from the rules, I know) and up it a bit then gradually taper them down to the recommended amounts. While I'd like to shave off a few pounds, I don't want to be angry doing it. I think if I can stick with it, my stomach will shrink but I am hungry on this one. Also, 16 ounces of water before every meal means you'll be runninng to the bathroom ALOT so plan for that or again, adjust the water intake to something more realistic like 8 or 12 ounces instead of 16 and drink with snacks (or before to get in the habit so its a natural reflex to just reach for a glass before a bite). Finally, you will be doing lots of prep but who ever said this was going to be easy? Shop and prep for the week, prep for the next day and you will have an easier time. Overall, highly recommended provided you give yourself a hall pass on 16 ounces of H2O at every meal and add some carbs in the afternoons until you've adjusted.

After enjoying Bob Harper's diet and exercise tips on Biggest Loser, I had to read this book. It didn't disappoint me. Bob gave me sensible rules to follow, and the book was easy to read and understand. It reads just like Bob would talk to you. Just finished the book, and I'm already using the rules he suggests.

Simple goal: to get thin. These simple rules will get you there. Harper's message is straightforward and brutally honest. Water, water, water. No soft drinks. But also - real tips on amount of protein and fibre - which foods will get you where you want to be and which ones provide a road block.

Honest assessment that exercise alone will not get you there - that you need to CHANGE your eating habits.

Great book, highly recommend.

I've always enjoyed Bob Harper's work on the Biggest Loser and this book sealed my opinion of him! These are 20 simple rules that will help you change the way you look at food, help make better choices, and lose weight. I got this book the first week it was released and each day I would read a rule and apply it for that day. As of now I've worked up through Rule 18 Go to bed hungry. 21 days to make a habit? This book fits right in with that train of thinking. Bob tells you that these rules are simple but nonnegotiable. I find that I've gotten the following rules down: Water, protein at every meal, fiber, veggies, lower carbs, cut out the white stuff (potatoes), go to bed hungry. Two weeks with this book and I already feel a difference. Thanks Bob and keep up the good work.

My husband and I have followed the Rules for the past week; he has lost 8 pounds and I have lost 3! We've found out that by eating according to the healthy menus, including snacks, that we feel mentally more alert and have more energy. I am a sugar junkie and my husband loves fried anything, so this is quite a change...for the better. We don't fee deprived at all. That said, a menu of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fish, and meat results in a much higher (albeit) healthier grocery bill. The cost of good health is worth the sacrifice. I know we're just getting started (both of us have 30 pounds to lose), but I can definitely see us staying the course.

Bob Harper has written the definitive diet book,if you're realistic about what it takes to lose weight. I have a stack of diet books a yard high, but this is the first diet that I have actually implemented. It's completely uncomplicated and the PERFECT diet for someone who fails at journaling. You can start the diet after reading the table of contents and Menu 1. And, while you're dropping weight that first week, you can finish the book to understand the principles more fully. To those who criticize the book because it "does not address exercise," I suggest you reread the introduction. This is a weight-loss book, not a guide to good health. The fact is, if you want to lose a lot of weight, you've got to do it nutritionally. For two years, I strength trained with a physical trainer. After herniating 2 discs, thanks to all that weight training, I gained 10 pounds and lost all my muscle. At this point, whatever exercise I can do is pretty limited. So, I am grateful for Bob's lack of emphasis on exercise. It gives me hope that I can and will succeed IF I follow the rules.

I watched my spinal surgeon get skinny over 3 months.I asked what he'd done and he told me he'd read
the Skinny Rules' and said 'it struck a chord.' I immediately ordered 3 copies for the family and they love it! It makes sense! We'll be skinny too and soon!

Let me start by saying I've lost 88 pounds by following Jillian's DVD's and advice. I have 22 pounds to go but am stuck on a plateau, so I decided to give Bob's Skinny Rules a go. I also eat mostly Paleo, so the advice for eating beans and cheese don't fit.

Having said that, I love the simplicity of the rules! Drink a full glass of water when you wake up and before every meal is something we all need to do, since we as a culture would rather drink sugar-laden soda's or fruit juice instead of plain water and are chronically dehydrated because of it.

Get enough sleep...what a concept! Turn the tv off, go to bed!

No carbs after lunch...brilliant!

Stop with the salt, sugar and fake sweetners....who knew?!!? (note the sarcasm...)

And my fave, don't eat it if you can't pronounce the ingredients. Jillian refers to these processed foods as Frankenfoods.

I like the rules and I love the recipes, with a few Paleo exceptions I mentioned in the beginning. A great common sense book to get you away from drive-thru's, processed crap, and back into your kitchen.

And Healthy!

I pre-ordered this book and I immediately read it when it was delivered. I've been a big fan of Bob Harper's training advice that he gives to the competitors in The Biggest Loser, and have several of his exercise DVDs. His reputation for success with helping people get fit and lose weight is evident, so I was very interested in what he has to say about diet.

This book is very easy to read, comprehend, and follow. There is enough explanation to satisfy those people that need an explanation before they follow anyone's advice, and just enough to not bore someone into not reading the book. I found the rules easy to remember and live by, and all based on common sense. I find that I've already been following quite a few of them since January, when I joined Weight Watchers, and have already lost 30 pounds. So I'm sure that following the extra few rules that I have not been following thus far will bring on more results and continued improved health and vitality!

This is a lifestyle change and as such, there is plenty of food, very little deprivation, and a new mindset to wrap your head around, but I give the book a big thumbs up! The recipes are easy and quick too!

Love me some Bob Harper. It's not ground breaking, but I don't think Bob is trying to say he invented anything - just how to put all the noise out there into a solid and easy to use format. It is common sense told in a motivating manner like only Bob can deliver.I love his style and the recipes are super delish and super easy. I also appreciate that 80% of the recipes are single serving since most recipe books for "healthy eating" start at 4 servings and I'm a single gal who will either eat the entire 4 servings or throw away the extras after 2 meals. I am following the rules! It really is simple. We'll see how I fair after 6 months - hopefully a healthier me!
