Book Description

Brothers Winchester, Remington, and Colt know the legends--they were trained from childhood to destroy demon predators, wielding the latest steam-powered gadgetry. It's a devil of a job. But sometimes your fate chooses you. . .

Chasing Trouble

Winn Jackson isn't interested in hunting nightmares across the Wild West--even if it's the family business. Unlike his rakehell brothers, Winn believes in rules. As sheriff of Bodie, California, he only shoots actual law breakers. That's what he's doing when he rescues the Contessa Drossenburg, Alexandra Porter, a lady with all the elegance of the Old World--grace, beauty and class. And then he sees her fangs.

Alexandra isn't just some bloodsucking damsel in distress, though. She's on a mission to save her people--and she's dead certain that Winn's family legacy is the only way. Luckily, aside from grace and class, she also has a stubborn streak a mile wide. So like it or not, Winn is going to come back with her to the mountains of Transylvania, and while he's at it, change his opinions about vampires, demon-hunting, and who exactly deserves shooting. And if she has her way, he's going to do his darnedest to save the world. . .

"Meyers puts the steam in steampunk."--Cherry Adair

Editorial Reviews

"Second in Meyers' uniquely wonderful western steampunk series, The Legend Chronicles, The Slayer continues to captivate...A world with wall-to-wall action and adventure, Meyers is a genuine, fresh voice in the paranormal romance genre. Not to be missed!" - 4.5 stars and TOP PICK! Terri Dukes, RT Bookreviews

"Smalltown sheriff Winchester Jackson is a cowboy hero who proves his worth from the first sentence...When he meets a woman who proves his match in battle as well as romance, a steamy tension underscores their fast-paced adventure." ~ Publisher's Weekly

From the Author

Welcome to book two of the Jackson brothers in the wild weird west. This time I've paired up the eldest of my Hunters with a noble vampire. And while Winchester would like nothing better than to kill her outright, he needs her just as much as she needs him to recover the stolen piece of the Book of Legend. Both of them will have to learn how to trust their worst enemy to find their greatest ally. I've done something with this series I've never tried before. The books in The Legend Chronicles happen concurrently, so whether you start with THE HUNTER or with THE SLAYER, both are happening at the same time and there is some specific crossover of characters I hope you'll enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this series! June 13, 2012
By jen719
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Winchester Jackson has been trained for one thing most of his life. To be a hunter of paranormal beings and destroy them if needed to protect the innocent. He and his brothers are considered to be "The Chosen," the prophetic brothers that are destined to prevent the arch demon, Rathe, from opening the Gates of Nyx and destroying the world. Winn has tried to leave that all behind him by becoming the sheriff of Bodie until Contessa Alexandra Porter walks into his life with an offer he can't refuse.

Alexa is on a mission to help Winn retrieve a portion of the Book of Legend that has been split into three parts before Rathe opens the Gates of Nyx. The Contessa is beautiful, sexy and extremely dangerous because she is a vampire and Winn has to suppress his instincts as a hunter to work with her. During their travels, Winn and Alexa face shape shifters, demons and other paranormal obstacles in their quest to retrieve the book. The attraction between them grows with each passing day until they begin to wonder what they will have to sacrifice for the possibility of having a life with another.

The Slayer was a great thrill-ride and I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved the aspect of Winn and Alexa working together because they had this wonderful connection with one another even though the idea of them collaborating would seem laughable to some. These two characters were exact opposites that should have been mortal enemies on sight but they were able to join forces and were surprised to discover that they weren't so different after all. Both were strong, independent people who were doing things based on routine and a sense of duty when their heart wanted them to lead another path that wouldn't be accepted by others in their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific steampunk historical romance April 1, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1883, although he was trained from childhood like his siblings (Remington - to follow and Colt - see The Hunter) Winchester Jackson prefers being the sheriff of Bodie, California than fighting vampires and demons. His Vampiric Imperial Majesty sends Lady Alexandra Porter to persuade Winn to work with her in retrieving a part of the Book of Legend that his sire hid decades ago.

Though he has doubts as his mantra has been the only good vampire is a dead vampire who cannot rise from the grave, Winn agrees to join Alexa on her mountainous quest in Transylvania to save her people. With steam gadgets created by brilliant inventor Marley Turlock to assist them on their journey, the pair confronts many adversaries demonic, vampiric; gizmos and mortal, but the most challenging is love.

The second Book of the Legends Chronicles is a terrific steampunk historical romance starring a western sheriff and a vampire battling a variety of paranormal and normal foes. Fast-paced from the moment Winn thinks he is rescuing a damsel in distress and never slows down as the twisting exciting storyline will prove a fan favorite with the only subtraction being the wait for Rem's entry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paranormal Romance with a Steampunk Twist March 4, 2013
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Book Two in the Legend Chronicles series focuses mainly on Winchester Jackson and his part in the quest to retrieve sections of the Book of Legend.

Book Two actually overlaps certain sections of Book One. We see parts of Book One that were originally told from the points-of-view of both Colt and Lilly, rewritten in Book Two and told from the points-of-view of Winchester and his vampire companion Alexandra.

The story begins in the Wild West, outside of Bodie, CA sometime in the year 1883.

Winchester (Winn) Jackson is the oldest Jackson brother. Because of events that happened when he was younger, Winn gave up the life of a Hunter some 10-years prior. Winn harbors a horrible nightmare from his youth. The event helped him decide that fighting Darkin wasn't worth it. Too many people lost their lives, including those that ever became close to a Hunter.

Lady Alexandra (Alexa) Porter, Contessa Drossenburg, emissary of His Vampire Imperial Majesty, Emporer Vladimir the Fifth (how would you like to try and fit that on a business card?!) is sent to solicit the help of the The Chosen. The vampires' 2nd third of the Book of Legend has been housed in the royal vampire castle for several years but was recently stolen. The vampires fear that if Rathe allows the Gates of Nyx to be opened up, vampires will become extinct due to the demons taking control and murdering, kidnapping, or enslaving the very thing that sustains them ~ Blood from humans.

The electricity between Alexa and Winn is unmistakable. As much as Winn tries to deny it, his feelings for her grow at an alarming rate throughout their time together. Alexa has a hard time believing that she's drawn to a mortal as strongly as she is. She hasn't felt this way about anyone in hundreds of years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Slays April 9, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Theresa Meyers has created another fabulous chapter in The Legend Chronicles with The Slayer, and this time readers will follow the eldest Jackson brother Winchester Jackson in his quest to save the world.

Winn was ready to settle sown and put his Hunter status on the shelf and leave that life for good. Winn is an amazing character with his love and loyalty to his brother even after the hell he was raised in. Growing up in a family if Hunters can be a dangerous sometimes, but as Winn found out looks can be deceiving and have deadly consequences in life and from all of the trouble Hunting had gotten him into, to protect his loved ones, Winn stopped Hunting and took up a star. Being the law in his small Bodie, CA town can keep Winn busy on any day and when Winn goes out to foil a stagecoach robbery his finds himself surrounded by the dead and a deadly woman in blue.

Alexandra Porter, Contessa Drossenburg, has much on her mind as she tries to hunt down an American Slayer who is said to be the Chosen of legend to help the Vampires end the reign of a Darkin who hell bent on killing other Darkin, and enslaving humans. Being in a new world is strange enough but as Alexandra encounters Winn she is swept away by feelings she had thought to have been lost all of these years of her widowhood, and with a deadly prophesy about, Alexandra must keep her wits about her even in the most trying of times.

With romantic suspense and all of the fabulous steampunk creations whirling around the storyline, The Slayer is a fantastic novel of epic proportions.
