Editorial Reviews

Nominated for 2014 GRAMMY Award : Special or Limited Edition Box Set Package The lost interviews of Howard Smith, 1969-1972. As a Village Voice journalist and radio personality, Smith was a central figure in the counterculture of New York City. In this capacity, he recorded scores of long-form conversations with rock stars and cultural icons of the time. Never intended to be heard unedited, the interviews are authentic and personal conversations with the most influential cultural voices of the time. The original audio reels then sat untouched in the back of Smith's loft for 40 years. Hundred of audio reels have now been digitized and restored, and are available for the first time. The box set is designed to invoke the experience of digging through the actual crates of reels. Beautiful, entirely original artwork was created in homage to the color palette, style and printing technology from that time. The booklet is filled with photos, letters and reproduced ephemera which was found among the reels. A timeline is included to give framework highlighting how closely album's releases and historical events were in relation to each other during this artistically unmatched time in our cultural history. The written copy, intended to give the listener a unique sense of being there themselves, was dictated by Howard Smith from his hospital bed.

It's like opening a time capsule from the turn of the 70s. You can actually get to know these stars and icons when they were at the moment that made them who we know them to be. But they had no idea what impact they'd go on to have. Janis Joplin's last interview ever given is incredibly personal. The way Jim Morrison finally snaps and loses his cool is unlike anything I've ever heard from him. Zappa interviewed with John & Yoko sitting next to him chiming in? Come on. This is just incredible. Absolutely gorgeous artwork as well. Hand numbered, needed to have one.

I don't know when or where the seller bought this or how long he has held onto this package. I do know this is abosolutely perfect.
It was sealed as advertised. Every CD was still in its shrinkwrap. The wood boxes have small magnetic locks. The booklet that
provides extra details to each interview is GREAT. You hear voices from the past in casual settings (Jim Morrison/Lennon/Lou Reed/Zappa/Jerry Garcia/Janis Joplin..just weeks before her death/Geo.Harrison, plus Cocker, Jane Fonda, Jagger, Townshend, James Taylor. My only complaint is that this was advertised as a LIMITED EDITION and MY set is labeled ...../500. SO, were there
ONLY 500 copies of Howard Smith's interviews sold (I paid $300 plus for my set) or were there thousands on the market? Being a rock 'n roll NUT, I got my $300 worth of information from these discs...as in Lennon describing his inspiration for, "Happiness is a Warm Gun", and an egotistic Zappa explaining how he conducted his band onstage, Pete Townshend describing how Moon unwittingly dragged his chaffeur to his death while being attacked by "skinheads". I don't imagine I will listen to these interviews more than once. I will most likely put this set up for sale on Amazon. (This is NOT a sales pitch...just my honest reaction to hearing these interviews). I have just started Box 2 of 3, listening to Dennis Hopper describe his experience with, "Easy Rider". In a word, "fascinating". Howard Smith was an insightful interviewer & it appears a close friend of John & Yoko. I have yet to hear, Geo. Harrison, Joe Cocker, the Bed-In, Abbie Hoffman, Jane Fonda & the Woodstock material. If you can find a used set of these CD's in good condition AND you are interested in R&R history, Do try and get a good deal. My sealed set WAS worth $300, but you need to be a serious collector to pay that kind of $ for a used set. As I said, I would like to know HOW many legitmate copies of this LIMITED EDITION were pressed. Good hunting.

The package is very nice & lives up to expectations. It is great to hear these musical icons in their prime in their own voices. Although the answers they give are often insightful, the questions asked by Mr. Smith are not always so. They tend to fall into patterns and show no signs of research or individuality. He asks similar questions of each of his subjects. I was hoping for more. It is a missed opportunity, but I'm still glad I bought the set.
