Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope ... Read more in Amazon's The Smiths Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Superfluously wonderful October 20, 2011
With exorbitant collector's sets being all the rage in the past few years, one wonders if an extravagant collector's set filled with 8 cds, 1 dvd, 8 LPS, and 25 7" singles is really worth the hefty (approximately $400) price tag.

Casual fans, stick with 'The Sound Of The Smiths' (2 Disc)
Hardcore fans should seek out the 'Smiths: Complete' (8 Disc)
Insane fans should seek out the 'Smiths: Complete Super Deluxe Collector's Box'

Inside, you get CDs and LPs for:

- The Smiths
- Hatful Of Hollow
- Meat Is Murder
- The Queen Is Dead
- Strangeways, Here We Come
- The World Won't Listen
- Louder Than Bombs
- Rank

The Complete Picture DVD (Region 0)

7" Singles (vinyl) with original artwork for:

- Hand In Glove (w/ 'Handsome Devil' (Live))
- Reel Around The Fountain (Troy Tate Session)(w/ 'Jeane')
- This Charming Man (w/ 'Jeane')
- What Difference Does It Make? (w/ 'Back To The Old House')
- Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now (w/ 'Suffer Little Children')
- William, It Was Really Nothing (w/ 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want)
- William, It Was Really Nothing (Alternate w/ 'How Soon Is Now?')
- How Soon Is Now?

5.0 out of 5 stars Right On Target... October 12, 2011
By theKLH
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Amazing. An impressive showing on the part of Rhino UK. I have been following all chatter since this box was announced, and I must admit I was on the fence. But when Amazon presented the import for pre-order at a total steal, ugggghhhhh...I should have ordered two. One I could drool over, and the other I could put in the vault to will out to future generations. To all the critics out there with the 'so and so's being greedy / the remasters are blah.blah.blah / these vinyl pressings should be considered bootlegs....'......blah blah', & with the moz protesting anyone looking into this. Dude, The Smiths are just a precursor to one mans solo career who I will argue as one of the greatest rock and roll singers of all time. Don't worry, the singer is getting his fair share compared to the pennies I spend on his former band. For the next reissue, repackage...I do want the tacky badge.

The Rhino US issue of 1000 is at the end of the month... So I say yes to The Smiths 2011 remasters project, but this big box is really something special. Just go for it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great box set October 31, 2011
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Along with my Beatles Mono remasters, this is my favorite box set. Beautiful box with amazing contents. A classy addition to any collection and the music, of course, sounds great! I received box set #3542 (I think there's 4000 sets).

This would have been 5 stars if the set actually came with the digital download cards it advertised came with the set. Unfortunately, our set didn't come with this with the excuse being that we are in the US. The digital downloads were for the UK version only.

Boxed album set thing getting out of control?
Die-hard fanatics with deep pockets are buying them. Some without deep pockets might get it as a gift, or scrimp and save and scrape up enough by cutting corners elsewhere. But I suspect most of this is being driven by collectors who feel that the price will only rise in the years ahead,... Read More
