Book Description

An ill-intentioned whisper, a prayer for karmic justice, a muttered curse upon those who managed to completely ruin our day. Most people are guilty of this indulgence at least once in their lifetime. But no matter how alone you thought you were, no matter how quietly you voiced those words. They still escaped your confinement, wormed their way into the shadows, and graced the ears of sinister beings craving nothing more than to indulge them.

What should’ve been a routine end-of-term exam period for Kari spirals into a series of events that reshapes her view of reality forever. It all began innocently enough. Tales of a spiritual prankster, whose sole purpose is the theft of every heeled shoe on campus, drives Kari’s logical nature to dismiss the rumors as superstitious nonsense. But every theory needs evidence to be proven. If only it were ‘just’ a ghost at the end of this rabbit hole.

For a certain fairy tale of the Red-Shoed variety may have more truth than fiction to its pages...

It is unfortunate that this title is tucked away in the occult corner of the shelf, where it likely won't get the attention it deserves. I can't help but think that it would do better if it were billed as young adult, but then again that is a category overwhelmed with mediocre writing... and this is better than that.

While the concept of the story - which I will not spoil here, as it is part of the charm - is outlandish in many ways, Aioshi manages to write it in such a way that it slowly becomes more terrifying than silly. Occasional moments of levity and an interesting and realistically flawed main cast - especially the arguable protagonist, Kari - help this supernatural tale of horror become better than you might otherwise suspect.

The writing is not perfect - there are a few stylistic choices that I would probably not have made - but it never detracts from the tale. The ending feels a little sudden, but at the same time is a natural place to end an act - and I sincerely hope that another act is forthcoming, especially with all the little nuanced secrets that can be gleaned by the last few chapters showing that there was a lot more going on than we were explicitly aware of (not to mention the various obvious questions still unanswered).

If you want to read a quirky story with some horror, where people occasionally make the wrong choices for the right reasons, you could do much worse than this book - and at this price, it would be a shame not to give it a try. I know I will be ready and willing to buy a follow-up, if and when the other shoe drops.
