Editorial Reviews

Review

"Some of my favorite Ryden paintings ever." -- David Pescovitz, boingboing.net

"The high prince of Lowbrow - known for his incomparable skill, his often shocking price tags, and his capacity to sell out just about anything - is ready for some attention from the art world." -- LA Weekly

About the Author

Mark Ryden came to preeminence in the 1990s during a time when many artists, critics and collectors were quietly championing a return to the art of painting. With his masterful technique and disquieting content, Ryden quickly became one of the leaders of this movement on the West Coast. Over the past decade, this marriage of accessibility, craftsmanship and technique with social relevance, emotional resonance and cultural reference has catapulted Ryden beyond his roots and to the attention of museums, critics and serious collectors. His work has been exhibited in museums & galleries worldwide.

Yoshitomo Nara is a contemporary Japanese pop artist. He currently lives and works in Tokyo, though his artwork has been exhibited worldwide.

Please do not get me wrong: the artwork inside "The Snow Yak Show" by Mark Ryden echoes gorgeous, surrealist fantasy that we have all come to know and love from this man. Unfortunately, while the book measures in at a nice substantial size, the paintings and illustrations herein number few (only 27 pages contain artwork). There are 10 graphite illustrations (the largest of which is approx. 5x7) and 9 oil paintings, several of which provide full-page close-ups or multi-page renderings. All of the work is gorgeous and sticks with the "Snow Yak" and winter theme.

Overall, I find it a lovely, inspiring collection and was happy to add it to my bookshelves. However, if you are picky about your art books (size, quantity of art therein, etc.), perhaps you should venture to your local bookstore to sneak a peak before purchasing.

It was a little bigger than I thought but it's such a beautiful book. The artwork is very clear and crisp.

This book is amazing!
However, I was expecting more information about his research, like in the Tree Show book.

Another wonderful book featuring the work of Mark Ryden. Just love it. I have others of his works and this book compliments these. Recommended for sure.
