Editorial Reviews

Review

"Michael Handel has assembled an authoritative and wide-ranging collection of key articles in the organizations field, and complements these papers with a terrific critical survey of the literature. His introductory essays will benefit both students and researchers alike. This collection is a real service to the field."

(Walter W. Powell)

"A unique reader and commentary with broad coverage of the classics, combined with a healthy skepticism about received theories and an emphasis on the impact of organizations on society. The lucid commentary brightens the field."

(Charles Perrow)

I think that writing selections, while skewed toward Sociological ideals, are wide grasp and thought. I have a greater understanding of alternate arguments now.

The book is a little long-winded, but thorough. It was a required text for a class I took and seemed to explain the material well with many examples. I only had to read sections once to attain a good understanding of the concepts.

I think the author of this book forgot not everyone doing their homework has a PhD. It was the hardest read I ever had for homework. I understood only about have of the points he was trying to get across. If your school can use another book I would recommend it because this book taught me nothing I needed to know the sociology of organizations. I am glad I had a good teacher.

This book is outdated - it depicts examples from organizations that are gone, old. and sociologically irrelevant to today's society. Having industry examples from the 1950s when you are trying to gain a concept of today's sociological elements of society, does not make sense. There are much more relevant examples of companies that could have been explored and made this text more relevant. The Editorial commentary is dull, and the overall organization of the book lacks structure.
