Editorial Reviews

Review

"Michael Handel has assembled an authoritative and wide-ranging collection of key articles in the organizations field, and complements these papers with a terrific critical survey of the literature. His introductory essays will benefit both students and researchers alike. This collection is a real service to the field."

(Walter W. Powell)

"A unique reader and commentary with broad coverage of the classics, combined with a healthy skepticism about received theories and an emphasis on the impact of organizations on society. The lucid commentary brightens the field."

(Charles Perrow)

If you are not a sociology student, you will want to prepare yourself for Michael J. Handel's The Sociology of Organizations by reading up on basic concepts first. If, however, you are a student of sociology, get ready for one of the most comprehensive guides through the history of organizations you will find anywhere. The only thing comparable is Charles Perrow's Complex Organizations: A Critical Essay.

Handel succeeds in bringing together a collection of articles that are classics in the field of organization as well some newer discussions as well. He then follows these up with a very thorough analysis of the material. From an article on the principles of scientific management written in 1911 to a piece written on density dependent processes in 2000, he covers it all.

Organizations, as we know them, are a fairly recent development. Handel puts their first appearance somewhere around 175 years ago, which means that their progress and history can actually be studied in its full scope. Sociology of Organizations touches on as many key elements as one can fit into a 550 page book - which is a lot!

As Handel says, "few aspects of modern life are untouched by organizations". In these pages you will find out how and why.

I think that writing selections, while skewed toward Sociological ideals, are wide grasp and thought. I have a greater understanding of alternate arguments now.

The book is a little long-winded, but thorough. It was a required text for a class I took and seemed to explain the material well with many examples. I only had to read sections once to attain a good understanding of the concepts.
