Clearly this is made with no money, but somehow the film maker get's it to work. You want to know what it's like on the New York City's Lower East Side? Watch this film. There are appearance by many of the local celebrities. Like Paul Bearer of Sheer Terror, Howie Pyro, Jesse Malin and many many more. Filmed all over downtown. From what I know the drugs and guns are all real. Filmed without permits. How many laws did they have to break to make this movie? Watch it.

Other stuff by the same group.
Barstool Prophets This was the book that came after the movie covering again the crazy nightlife of the downtown bar scene.

The thing about micro cinema is there's no studio, no money, no big PR firm pushing them, and yet they still made a film. From what I know about the Antagonist Art Movement, it's likely they were sitting around one night at some bar on the Lower East Side when one of them said, "Why can't we make a movie? All our friends want to act. We know the people who own the bars and the bands that play in them. Let's make a movie." And the Soft Hustle is what came after.

If you like John Waters early movies in Baltimore then this is for you. Black and White, filmed hand held, witty dialog, what more could you want?

The Soft Hustle brings you straight into the Lower East Side bar scene where one night stands, drugs, fighting, and of course, hustling are the norm. I like the title because anything can be a hustle, whether it's getting someone to buy you a drink, trading art, getting laid, or selling guns out of a trash bag on the street. These things are constantly happening throughout the film and all fall under the umbrella of the title of the movie. One of my favorite characters is the bartender, who is a womanizer to the fullest extent. He even has his prostitute girlfriend believing that he's a saint until she finally gets fed up with him and flips out on his life (one of the best scenes/performances in the movie). Ethan Minsker's filmmaking is reminiscent of Jim Jarmusch. The Soft Hustle is a movie I would highly recommend. I look forward to watching more Ethan Minsker films.
