Worship is a strong and important arm of the church. It helps reach down to the core of a person as a tool that touches the heart of each parishioner. It's a call to action. But music is in an ever changing cycle. How do you choose the songs that will reach the people and when do you retire old ones? Are the classics always best, or is contemporary music ruining our culture? These are just a few of the questions discussed in this handy guide.

This product does what it promises - helps create a simple worship planning process by identifying key ideas and concepts. I had been on my own journey of this type of thinking lately -- this book merely gave me language and focus and process to approach the ever broadening and often challenging area of planning services for an evangelical church.

Being a relatively new worship leader, I've been slowly developing my own "song cycle system" through trial and error. Thankfully, Jon has produced an excellent, well-developed, and time-tested approach to worship set list selection and rotation. My guess is that even seasoned worship leaders will gain useful insights from Jon's system.

I love Jon's conversational writing style, and I even laughed aloud a few times due to his fun anecdotes. There is a lot of meat packed into this guide - Jon doesn't just throw his system at you and tell you how to implement it. Instead he deliberately highlights the need for such a system and thoroughly explains each component.

As I write this review, I have all my binders of chord charts out and strewn across the floor as I eagerly begin to implement the SongCycle.

I look forward to seeing how the Lord will use it and pray that our worship time is enriched as a result.

This is an excellent book for the worship leaders. There's no doubt that the author has been leading worship for a very long time. It's just jammed packed with worship leading tips.

The thing I liked about this book is how diversified it is. Much of the concepts revolve around leading worship in a large church where there would be several worship teams. Even though I've never been a worship leader in that capacity, I came away with wonderful tips that can help me on the smaller scale of being a worship leader.

If you are just beginning to lead worship or have been doing so for many years (like myself for the past 10 years) you will find plenty of ideas that will help you be an even better leader than you are now.

Don't hesitate to get this book!

This is an amazing book. I am a children's worship leader, so I wasn't sure it was going to pertain to me. I did, however, find that a lot of the themes carry over into finding new songs for the kids to sing.
I especially liked the part about introducing a new song. What I learned from the book has already been helpful in that respect.
Not only was the book a good source of information, it was easy and fun to read. Nicol uses stories and examples in his writing that make the book enjoyable and help the reader grasp the concepts. I can imagine this would be a helpful guide to anyone who participates in the music ministry of their church.

I ran across this book by accident while looking for resources to help with my process of selecting and introducing new music for worship. I fully expected this book to be a good resource with a textbook like feel. To my delight I found that I was quickly smirking, chuckling and finally bursting out with honest laugh-out-loud laughter. Jon has an excellent writing style full of whit that engages readers and encourages a full read through of the material. This is NOT a boring read.

The SongCycle is truly an excellent resource for worship leaders desperate to get a grasp on their ever expanding music catalogs. Jon also provides wisdom and insight in areas that often trouble worship leaders such as encouraging congregations to engage in worship and the introduction of new music while honoring past classics. When I finished SongCycle I felt as if I had been in an concentrated micro-mentoring session with this experienced worship pastor.

I fully intend to implement the principles behind the SongCycle system into the way I schedule worship songs and introduce new material.

Thank you Jon for writing this book!

Every worship planner knows intuitively that songs have a life cycle, but Nicol has codified this into a system that is helpful at the local church level. So far I've been using the "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" method, but after reading SongCycle, I plan to be more methodical (and honest?) with my church's repertoire.

Within a week our music team had sorted our songs and now I feel we are moving forward with direction and in control of our songs rather than a hit and miss approach with some songs staying unsung for months on end.
