Editorial Reviews

Review

"We all know that my friend Michael Bolton is a gifted musician and a devoted philanthropist---but you may not know that he's also a talented storyteller. THE SOUL OF IT ALL is the fascinating journey of a man who is as powerful, bold, and soulful as his voice."

---Bill Clinton

I think I really wanted to know all about Michael Bolton as a person. He didn't expose much about himself as a person. The book was uninteresting and if all a person wants to know is his experiences as a song writer and musician, then this is your kind of book. I just felt it was boring and couldn't wait for it to be OVER!

I was disappointed with this story, I thought to much was written about his wild days
I love his music, I quit reading this book after the first five chapers.

I really wish Michael's book contained more of the soul in which he refers to several times within the book. It's as if he's skimmed through his life telling a lightly layered sugar coated story of his celebrity encounters. And it pains me to say that! I truly enjoy his music and have been looking forward to this read. This book offers the tip of the iceberg and little else. You know his life has had a lot of grit with eighteen years struggling to make it since he was a teenager getting stoned with his friends, marrying, having children, struggling to pay the bills, divorcing, dating, his perils as a single father, etc. He tells you all this, he just doesn't offer the soul of it, or the details. The book is more a narration of a collection of stories from his professional/public life; not so much regarding his personal/home life.

Michael Bolton certainly loves himself but he doesn't want to reveal much about himself beyond his songs or his wild escapades. This book is filled with him bragging about his drug use at age 13, his dropping out of school by the 9th grade, his womanizing, his chart positions, the hundreds of songs he has written, and the famous people he has encountered.

The ironic problem, considering the title, is that the book is soulless. There is no insight into the man, who he is or why he made certain choices. He glosses over his marriage and children, saying that he was too busy earning a living to be there for them--yet he had plenty of time to golf and jet around the world to do charity events or write songs with others when he was already rich. He does devote a little time to Nicolette Sheridan, but that almost seems like a kiss-up chapter where he carefully says only wonderful things about his ex-fiancee. He expresses his devotion to Bill and Hilary Clinton, claiming they are the most intelligent people he has ever met (which came as no surprise since he never got past 9th grade!). And he angrily defends himself against the lawsuit he lost regarding copying the Isley Brothers "Love is a Wonderful Thing" without acknowledging that the two choruses are almost identical.

There are a few interesting stories in the book but the guy is full of himself and overestimates his success. He has often been considered a joke by the industry and radio listeners--but he tries to make the claim that he is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. He is known as a bit of a self-centered hot head, yet he claims he is easy to work with. The guy needs a big dose of humility before he truly reveals his soul because you won't find it here.

I am a huge fan of Michael's music, huge fan. I have his cds and DVDs and decided to purchase this book to learn more about the kind of person he is. Well, I truly enjoyed the first part and I was very impressed with the description of what he went through in order to become successful. Some of the things I didn't care for, like his use of drugs and leaving school so early in life, but I still find him to be extremely talented. However, I should have stopped when I read that he finally made it. That part when he describes being able to take his girls to the mall and provide for his family. The reason why is that after that point, it was disappointing to me to know that he divorced the wife that was there for him when times were rough, the one who worked hard so he could go after his dreams. It was disappointing that he barely acknowledged that and went on to dedicate an entire chapter of the book to Nicolete. Also, all the talking about opera and golf were immensely boring to me. I still like his music though but too bad I allowed my personal beliefs interfere with my reading.

This book is the first and last thing I'll ever buy from M.B. I enjoyed seeing his music videos back in the 90's but never liked his music enough to buy it. Maybe he's a better person than he comes off as in the book. I have never skipped through any memoir, but I did the last 1/4 of this one. Sorry to say M.B. seems like a self centered ego maniac, workaholic, who used women. I can't remember him saying anything nice about his ex wife, or seeing a photo of her...the woman who gave birth to his three daughters. He strung along and broke engagement to N.S. after she stuck with him for many many years. Can't put my finger on it but he doesn't come off as likable. I was surprised that he has written so many songs for famous people. He is very talented, just not the kind of music or man I like.

Heard THE SOUL OF IT ALL: MY MUSIC, MY LIFE (Hachette Audio), written and read by Michael Bolton.

The author, the popular singer and songwriter, traces his career from the days of playing guitar for food money on the street corners in Greenwich Village to singing street jingles to keep his family afloat and eventually to the peak of success in his industry.

Along the way, he's encountered a star-studded cast of characters, including Paula Abdul, Cher, Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Ray Charles, Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Bon Jovi, Wynonna Judd, Nicolette Sheridan and many others.

It was fun listening to the stories about each of the above. I especially enjoyed learning how he came to perform with Luciano Pavarotti. And I was interested in his spin on the court battle that he eventually lost with the Isley Brothers over the copyright of a song.

Also, I was impressed to learn about his decades of charitable work.

As an added bonus, a song is included in the CD edition: 'Gotta Keep Dreamin'."
