Editorial Reviews

This Shaw Brothers classic, masterfully directed by Hua Shan (The 14 Amazons), is a harrowing lesson in achieving the coveted Number One sword-wielding status. Ti Lung (Opium and the Kung- Fu Master, A Better Tomorrow) is the Nameless Swordsman bent on defeating the faceless King of Swords to claim the title, and the glory, for himself. Hordes of fighters lunge from the shadows to cut down the mysterious challenger. Even a cunning seductress takes a stab at him in a revealing bath house assassination. It is said that a man’s weapon reflects his utmost dreams, desires and fears. A warrior with no name and one motive has a soul as merciless as cold steel.

Soul of the Sword was an interesting film that revolves around the aspirations of a young Swordsman.

The film starts when a young swordsman challeges the emperors lead instructor, the King of Swords to a duel. His hope is to defeat the King of Swords so he can take the title for himself. However, he makes a calculated error when doing so. He brings the woman he loves along with him and loses the duel. As a result, he is killed and his lover also commits suicide once the duel is over. It is thought that he lost mainly because he was distracted by his woman during the duel, which broke his concentration.

As the duel was occuring however, a young boy happens to watch the whole thing. He decides that he will grow up one day to challenge and defeat the King of Swords himslef so he can claim the title. Ten plus years go by and he becomes an adult with suberb sword skills. Then he goes around as the nameless swordsman, creating a reputation for himself as he defeats other well known swordsmen. At the same time he is haunted by the image of the young woman who committed suicide after the duel. He shrugs it off at first until he meets a young lady who looks exaclty like the woman that has been haunting him. He eventually falls for her, but continues to make plans to fight the King of Swords. However, he obtains a friend that warns him that his duel will not go well if he continues to have a hinderance in his life, like the young man did from several years before. The nameless swordsman eventually understands that his new found love will become his distraction as well, so he takes matters to correct it.

Eventually he comes to the duel with the King of Swords, but things don't turn out the way he expected, and he soon regrets some of the decissions he made to get to that point.

Seller was prompt. Material arrived when predicted. Material was in excellent shape as advertised. Material was as adveristed, good olde kung-fu movies. I am not a movie expert, except in what I like. I just enjoy kung-fu movies as a great mental break from humdrum. I especially enjoy these period pieces. This is fun movie.

Wow excellent movie! I'm a Ti Lung fan for life and he brought it in this movie! Love his acting and fighting skills. The young lady was beautiful too. Glad they paired Ti Lung up with someone different. Interesting story. Great cinematography. Worth every penny for me

Soul of the Sword was released in 1978.It is one of Ti Lung's best Shaw Brother's movies. It is directed by Hua Shan, whose credits include Angel Force, Disciples of Shaolin Temple(Fortune Star),Little Dragon Maiden,Portrait in Crystal,Tales of an Eunuch,Usurpers of Emperor's Power,Flying Guilotine 2,Kill a Jaguar,Super Inframan. It also stars Ku Feng(Avenging Eagle,New One Armed Swordsman),Li Chen Chi(Battle Wizard,Heaven and Hell),Norman Chu(Duel to the Death,Bastard Swordsman 1&2)

In the world of martial arts, the king of swords(Ku Feng) is ready to retire. He has been on top of the game for decades.A young boy Nameless(Ti Lung) has seen most of his battles. After watching a young swordsman with his wife challenge King of Swords, the young man loses the duel along with his life. His wife decides to take her life by stabbing herself with her lover's sword.Days later Nameless tries to assassinate King of Swords and fails.King of Swords spares his life and tells him if he wants to challenge him he must challenge him to a duel.Nameless then grows up to be a man and fights his way to the top,to finally one day challenge King of Swords and take his title.

This is one of Ti Lung's early movies. As well as one of his best. His fighting ability and acting ability is superb. He stops at nothing to challenge all of the swordsmen to defeat Ku Feng.
