4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Antonio Robert on January 17, 2013
Format: Audio CD
EMI cannot well compete with Deutsche Grammophon in terms of sheer depth of Martha Argerich record catalog, so for their celebration of the artist's 70th birthday they chose for a bulk of three discs the live recordings recorded during Martha Argerich Project sessions in Lugano, Switzerland, between 2002 and 2009, featuring promising young artists.
Discs are arranged according to type of compositions. Disc One with concertos includes a wonderful Second Concerto second movement by Chopin, Bartok's first movement of 3rd Concerto and Prokofiev's Finale of 3rd (trumping her earlier DG version of 1967 with both feeling and grandeur), all three recorded in Canada in the late 1990's. The final tracks are taken from the exciting Shostakovich concerto, where the trumpet virtuoso Sergei Nakariakov show his absolutely top class.
Disc Two starts with the complete 2007 live recording of Schumann's Kinderszenen - a real rarity, given the fact that Argerich virtually ceased to give solo recitals in the mid 1980's. After the highlights from the 1965 Chopin "legendary" record comes a handful of great piano duet performances of the works by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Ravel and the favorite encore, Paganini Variations by Lutoslawski.
Disc Three consists of chamber music performances, including a cello sonata by Debussy with Mischa Maisky, published in 1983, and Czech composer Leos Janacek's Concertino for seven instruments. But the definite highlight of this disc is Schumann's Piano Quintet, brisk and driving, where the four young string players more than hold their own against Martha's supreme pianism and the result is one immaculate, wondrous performance full of spontaneity.
If you like Martha Argerich and you are not too well acquainted with her Lugano sessions - especially those of you should grab this collection immediately.
