These booklets include the lyrics to all the much-loved songs of the film as well as the text of the story, sympathetically adapted by Bert Fink.

The Sound of Music is one of my family's favorite movies, so this Classic Collection Pop-Up is the perfect book for our collection.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's mega-hit "The Sound Of Music" reduced the true life saga of the Trapp Family to a musical fairy tale. Now, everything has come full circle-- and the musical has been transformed into a fairy tale pop-up book for children. I think a pop-up book is a rather odd way to celebrate the musical's 50th Anniversary. But the pop-up version, featuring illustrations by Dan Andreasen and paper engineering by Bruce Foster, is surprisingly successful-- at least in terms of its artistry and artwork. On another level. however, the pop-up is a bit of a disappointment and a cop-out.
The Andreasen/Foster depictions of the Trapp Family Villa, the wedding scene at Nonnberg Abbey, and the final scene of the escape across the Alps, are especially vivid and impressive. The pop-up features six major scenes, with mini-pop-ups also included. The lyrics (by Oscar Hammerstein II) to several songs--"The Sound Of Music," "A Problem Like Maria". "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi", "The Lonely Goatherd", "Climb Every Mountain", "So Long, Farewell" and "Edelweiss"-- are included within the mini-pop-ups. Bert Fink's story adaptation is odd and problematic. Fink retains the sugary/sweet elements and characters (Maria, the nuns, the Captain and his seven children) while completely removing any trace of dramatic arch or substance.
The characters of Elsa, Max, and Rolfe, the boy who later became a Nazi-- indeed, the Nazis altogether-- are completely absent from the pop-up version. Some may sensibly state that the Nazi occupation of Austria, so integral to the Trapp Family story and the musical itself, has absolutely no place in a pop-up book. The pop-up book merely says the Trapp family are chased and must escape out of Austria.

Got this for my 5 year old dd who is a huge fan of the movie musical. The pop-ups are all lifted from scenes in the movie. Every page has additional lift the flap sections with lyircs and history. dd will have to be very gentle with this book, but i was so glad to find this new title for her!

Last Christmas I was watching "The Sound of Music," which I first watched when I was about 8 years old, and thinking "it's a shame kids don't watch this sort of thing any more," when my two nieces, 3 and 9, turned up out of the blue and started singing along. They knew all the words, so I guess kids do watch this sort of thing! For children who love the film, children you want to introduce to the film, or just for sentimental grown-ups like me, this book is an absolute treasure. It follows the story of the film, but illustrator Dan Andreason has captured the spirit of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical without simply including caricatures of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The soft colours and detailed drawings have an appropriate hint of nostalgia and give the book an heirloom quality.

The book itself is substantial and weighty, with six double-page panoramic pop-ups. These include:

1. Maria Dancing in the mountains above Salzburg, with the city and convent in the foothills. Maria is fixed on a tiny acrylic rod so she actually twirls around.
2. Captain Von Trapp introducing his 7 ("seven?!") children to Maria in the hall of his grand house. The room even has a perspex arched window.
3. The children sitting on Maria's bed during the thunderstorm and singing.
4. The church where Maria and Captain Von Trapp are married.
5. The Trapp Family Singers performing at the Salzburg Music Festival.
6. The Family escaping over the mountains.

The pictures themselves may take some wrangling when you first open the pages. The three-dimensional panoramas have a lot of folds and tabs, and some of them may need tweaking. The trick is to make sure the pages are open a full 180 degrees to get everything to stand up properly.

I love pop-up books, so I bought this book to prepare my young granddaughter to see a local children's theatre version I was in of "The Sound of Music." I was as enchanted with this book as she was, from the first page where Maria twirls to the last page showing the Trapp Family's escape. It tells the story of the play very nicely, features lyrics for the main songs in the play, has gorgeous illustrations, and some of the most elaborate pop-up pages I have ever seen. A lot of fun for young and old--very good buy. We are about to wear it out from reading it every day!

I bought this to entertain my 2 nieces and my 2 year old son, who love the movie... I returned it because it contained only a few songs and an abbreviated version of the story. There are much better pop-up books from the same publisher that I would highly recommend over this one.

I purchased this as a gift for a friend of mine who, like me, is a fan of the movie. Although we are both adults (at least in age!) we found the book delightful! It is a must for any fan!

The Classic Collectible Pop-up was excellent. The pops were very well done and each had several layers of pictures. The last one showing the mountains was just awesome. In addition the smaller story inserts also had pop-ups. Our grand daughter loved it.
