Editorial Reviews

First time on CD for Guy Clark's fourth album. Produced by Rodney Crowell and originally released on Warner Bros in 1981, The South Coast Of Texas was recorded in Los Angeles and features Crowell's compadres from Emmylou Harris's Hot Band and other denizens of the So Cal new country scene including Vince Gill, , Rosanne Cash, bassist Emory Gordy, Ricky Skaggs, and many others. Includes classics including She's Crazy For Leavin' (a 1988 hit for Rodney Crowell), Heartbroke (a giant hit in 1982 for Ricky Skaggs), and New Cut Road, plus a sizzling remake of Clark's Rita Ballou.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Of! May 13, 2007
By Raven
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a big fan of Guy Clark, "South Coast Of Texas" happens to be my ultimate favorite of his many releases that I own one way or the other or both [CD/LP]. I just couldn't figure WHY in the heck it took so long for it to become available on CD.

Every tune here, I give at least an A or 5*. The LP/CD starts off with "Who Do You Think You Are", a tune I'd sing/recite for my coworkers often [and I'm not from Texas, but have been to Ft. Worth] it's easy to see why a Rodney Crowell would be 'soooo' interested/inclined in/to covering a lot of Guys' songs/tunes/compositions/lyrics.

If you like anything in the Country/Blues/Americana/Folk Genre's, you HAVE to add this GEM to your collection. This is an easy MUST-HAVE.

Take also a special listening to "Crystelle", "New Cut Road", "Rita Ballou", "Heartbroke", "She's Crazy For Leaving", and "Calf Rope".

Trust Me. If you don't care for the aforementioned, you're tracking down the wrong road.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest "alt-country" albums ever made May 18, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is my all-time favorite album by alt-country troubadour Guy Clark... A founding member of the legendary Austin scene, Clark is considered one of the finest songsmiths in modern country music... This 1981 masterpiece captures him at his most good-natured and joyful... The album is packed with gems such as "Rita Ballou," "New Cut Road," "She's Crazy For Leaving," "The Partner Nobody Chose," and "Heartbroke," which he co-wrote with Rodney Crowell. It's the kind of album you'll love to crank up to full volume and sing along with... Thank goodness it's finally back in print!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Disc, But Already Out on CD October 19, 2009
Format:Audio CD
The statement that this is the first time out on CD is wrong. Rounder issued a set with three complete original LPs on a 2CD set, titled "Craftsman". This is on it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad Packaging August 26, 2013
By Cade
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
It took forever for the package to arrive. I order 4 different albums from 4 different sellers and this was the last to arrive and considerably later than all the others. It was within the 20 days or whatever that was stated but come on. Every thing I have ever order has made it in at least 6 days. When I tracked it, it had been all over the north. It looks like it got lost or forgot about somewhere. It took forever to get here. I was already worried that it was going to be damaged because of the traveling it did. When I finaly received it, the box that it was shipped in was bent at every corner. It had a bow in it like an old hub cap. I opened it up and there was only two pieces of light cardboard on each side of the album and one wrap of small bubble wrap. BAD PACKAGING IN MY MIND. This is the first that has come in this way. The album was very warm from being on the truck so I placed it between some other vinyls on my shelf to see if it would return to its original shape. No such luck. When I put the album on the turntable, the needle sets down and instantly jumps a verse or two into the song. The reason is that the warp is so bad in one spot that when it gets to the needle, the needle just can't stay in the grove. It sucks!! The only reason I'm giving it two stars is because it will play ok after you get through the first track. So it's not a total loss but still sucks. I will not put all of the fault on the seller but the packaging should have been way better. I know that nothing can be 100% protected but the packaging shuold indure the shipping in most cases. If it wasn't in transit so long, would it of arrived in better shape?? I'll never know.
