Editorial Reviews

Review

I wholeheartedly endorse this book and strongly encourage you to carefully read its message. Mark up its pages. Devour its truths. Share it with others. Use it as an evangelistic tool. Draw from it to preach. Use it to teach small group Bible studies. You will find this book to be an invaluable resource. --Steven J. Lawson, Senior Pastor, Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, Mobile, Alabama

The modern day pseudo-sophisticates who attempt to craft a 21st-century culture featuring the autonomy of individuals who rule their own lives have blindly overlooked one basic fact of life--Jesus Christ in heaven and on earth has always been and will forever be 'King of kings and Lord of lords' (1 Tim 6:15; Rev 17:14; 19:16). Scripture unmistakably, frequently, and compellingly presents Christ's kingship in a timeless, omnicultural, and obligatory sense. Mike Abendroth's courageous portrayal of King Jesus can bring light and life to a dead and dark generation which futilely exchanges the eternal glory of God for the bankrupt, alleged grandeur of humanity. This volume captures the profound sense of Jesus' kingship which makes it a must read for all Christians and for those seeking to know the regal reality of life eternal in the kingdom of God. --Richard Mayhue, Th.D., Executive Vice President and Dean, The Master s Seminary, Sun Valley, CA

There is a reason why believers call on Jesus as our 'Lord and Savior'. Christ is the most blessed of all despots, and He is right to demand the complete submission of His people. Yet ours is a generation that desires a Savior who is less than Lord. Mike Abendroth has done a wonderful service by setting forth the kingly demands of our Lord Jesus in all their gospel sweetness. Here is hard truth that heals! Here is a surrender that liberates! Read of Jesus Christ, the Gracious Despot, and start living in the power of the gospel for a transformed life. --Richard D. Phillips, Senior Minister, Second Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC

"You are holding what is destined to be one of the worst-selling books of all time." - Todd Friel

This is an `endorsement' for a new book entitled The Sovereignty and Supremacy of King Jesus: Bowing to the Gracious Despot by Mike Abendroth. The endorser's point is simple: people don't like to be ruled because they want to rule. And therefore, they don't like Jesus the king because they prefer Jesus their buddy. This of course, is nothing new.

Abendroth has the deck stacked against him a bit. This also helps support the need for such a book.

It is clear from reading the book that the author has a burden for people to see God as he is revealed in Scripture. God is revealed as a King, a Monarch, a Despot, a Lord. So Abendroth works to show what that means and looks like.

The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 unpacks the biblical data for God being king. In Part 2 we read of the practical implications of this theological truth.

To be honest, when I got the book in the mail I couldn't put it down. I plowed right through it. This is because of its topic, cadence, and tone.

1. Topic: As mentioned above, this topic is one that desperately needs to be addressed within and without the church. I need to hear this. As I read this I was continually reminded of the fact that Christ is the great and eternal King. He will forever reign. This supremacy demands my worship.

2. Cadence: The danger in a book with a weighty theological topic like this is to get bogged down quoting every Dutch guy throughout history. But Mike is sneaky. He teaches you deep theology without you knowing it. Like a theological Jedi he keeps you moving along without you realizing it.

"What thoughts flood our minds when we think about God? Do we think of Him as King? If so, what kind of King? In this book Mike Abendroth seeks to address a twofold problem: most Christians do not consider God as any type of Monarch, and, if they do, they think about monarchs that are weak rather than reflecting on the utter Lordship of God, the ultimate King. In Part 1, Mike Abendroth demonstrates that the whole Bible reveals God as King. In Part 2, he describes the life-changing implications that flow from that revelation. Filled with insightful quotations, worshipful hymns, and thoughtful study questions, this book helps us to biblically embrace God as our King." This one comes with endorsements by Steven Lawson, Richard Mayhue and Richard Phillips.

Format: Paperback
Part of the Day One Publishing `Truth For All Time' series, `The Sovereignty and Supremacy of King Jesus' is subtitled with a provocative `Bowing to the Gracious Despot' subheading. This title is clearly explained from its roots in the original Bible languages and leads into an informative, challenging and always relevant journey of discovery.
This book divides into two sections, one on Kingmakers, demonstrating that the whole of the Bible reveals God as King and the other on the Coronation and roles of the King, describing the life-changing implications that flow from that revelation. It contains 11 full chapters and a stimulating conclusion. It also offers very appropriate Appendices on the Enthronement Psalms, an alternative outline of the Gospel of Matthew and a Charles H Spurgeon sermon on `The Unconquerable King'.
Readers will be stimulated by the variety of insightful quotations, poems, thoughts and meditations from a range of sources, hymns and study questions to draw out the lessons from each section and summary. The end of each chapter is a stimulus to further reading as it is well referenced and readers will be familiar with many of the sources.
This book proudly helps us to biblically embrace God as our King.

This is a needed book today with so many man-centered books on the market. He references earthly kings (make sure you read 1 and 2 Kings before starting to read the book for background)and compares their rule and aspects of being a king with the kingship of Jesus, a better and more awesome kingship. He looks at kingship from different angles -approaching a king, speaking for the king, listening to the king, a king's rule and his sovereign choice. This book helped me to see Jesus more as high and mighty and glorious

Here are the chapters in the book

Part 1 Kingmakers
Ch 1 Jesus Christ as Despot
Ch 2 The Decree of the King
Ch 3 To what degree is God "King" The extent of God's Rule
Ch 4 Prophet, Priest, and King

Part 2 - Coronation of the King
Ch 5 "Kingship Salvation'
Ch 6 Preaching: Speaking for the king
Ch 7 When the King talks, we should listen
Ch 8 Speaking to the King: Approaching God Through Prayer
Ch 9 The King's Sovereign Choice
Ch 10 Worship of the King
Ch 11 The Return of the King
