I was given this book as a gift and just ordered two more as Christmas gifts. Anything by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell is bound to be outstanding. And this one is.

This book is published by one of my publishers, though I have no financial stake in it. I'm also not part of its intended audience. Take these two facts into account when weighing my review.

As someone who is fascinated by space travel and who has written a political thriller set on the Moon, I was happy to get the chance to read this compilation of sayings by Edgar Mitchell, the sixth human being to walk on our natural satellite. And certainly, I find it believable that someone who has ventured into the vacuum would experience transcendence. But what such a person does with that matters as much as the moment itself, and I find Mitchell's ideas to be adrift outside the rational world.

In sing-song verse, aphorisms, and excerpts, he tells us that he has reached a point in believing in universal consciousness. That, at least, has grounding in venerable teachings, and when he derives from this belief that we should stop spending so much on waging war and work toward sustainable energies and economies, I agree with him. But he goes much deeper into mysticism. He sees us as part of one interconnected whole, entangled by the spooky workings of quantum mechanics, though his conclusions have no basis in actual physics and sound more like Deepak Chopra. He tells us that UFOs carry real alien visitors and that human minds can communicate with inanimate objects and each other across vast distances.

I gave it three stars. Even though I find most of the conclusions hookey, they are clearly presented. And unlike many self-appointed gurus, Mitchell strikes me as genuine.

Edgar Mitchell is a pseudoscientist. I'm a science journalist, and I've investigated and reported on his quackery before. But even if he wasn't, this book is the literary equivalent of someone writing a bunch of memes about you and then taking all the cool pictures out of it. Bought this for research, now I don't know if I can recycle it...don't waste your time or money on this.
