Review

In a collection that combines the imagination of Richard Matheson's Twilight Zone contributions, the macabre fun of Stephen King's Creepshow tales, and the almost-childishly cruel final twists of Tales from the Crypt, William Vitka invites us to join him in the fun that is The Space Whiskey Death Chronicles. -- Beauty In Ruins book reviews

[Vitka's] work evokes the best of the "Twilight Zone" and "Tales from the Darkside." It's a completely fresh voice sharing a horror that feels as authentically eldritch as anything Poe and Lovecraft invented...It's the mark of great stories that even when you can guess the ending that the journey was worth the time invested. This collection meets--and exceeds--this goal every time. - Nerdcaliber.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, fun horror/scifi short stories! January 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Usually when I do reviews, I summarize the plot. But how do you do that for an anthology of short stories? The Space Whiskey Death Chronicles are a collection of 14 very different stories: The Dangers of Field Work, On The Rocks, Bodily Harm, Smalley's Smirk, Urban Decay, Hell of a View, The Boneyard, The Thing In The Tunnel, The King Lives, Jack the Ripper Savior of Humanity, I Voyager, Janitors of the Cosmos and Best Friends Forever - Whether You Like It Or Not. Many of these stories have very sad endings. Some of them are hilarious. Some of them are just really fun and scary. I've picked out a few of my favorites to summarize:

The Dangers of Field Work - Sisters working in a field, looking for food, are suddenly attacked for no good reason. Can one of them stop the attack?

Hell of a View - A food vendor is waiting for the late-night crowd to come out of the club when suddenly the streets are filled with creatures killing everyone and an apocalypse begins. Can he get back to his family in time to save them?

Urban Decay - A bloody murder causes a NYC detective to look for the person behind the attack, but he may not be ready for what he discovers.

Jack the Ripper, Savior of Humanity - What if Jack the Ripper wasn't just a mindless killer? What if the purpose of the killings was to save humanity?

The Thing In The Tunnel - Something lives in the tunnels underneath NYC. And it's not nice...it's hungry. So hungry.

At first I thought the stories were all science fiction, and some of them are, but then they started to take a turn to the horror side of things. And that's when a light bulb went off in my head. The stories reminded me of the movies Gremlins, Creepshow and Tales from the Darkside.

This a collection of stories both sad and sadistic, both fun and frightening, with endings that are often as horrid as they are humorous. You know Vitka is leading you down some dark hallways, but you can never quite anticipate what lies around that final shadowy turn.

The Dangers of Field Work is a perfect kick-off for the collection, a story that initially seems to be a grim bit of science-fiction, but which reveals itself to be something very different. On The Rocks actually is a chilling tale of hard science-fiction, with an ending that honestly surprised me, while Smalley's Smirk is a rather clever tale, dealing with broken down sex-robots and electronically transmitted STDs, that worked better than the basic premise suggests.

Hell Of A View was a creepy tale of one Halal vendor's desperate race to be reunited with his family before the apocalypse hits its peak. The Boneyard is, perhaps, the most Twilight Zone-like stories of the entire collection, an homage (of sorts) to one of Matheson's classics. The Thing In The Tunnel is a great slice of horror about the gruesome horror that lie within the tunnels deep underneath New York City, while Jack The Ripper, Saviour Of Humanity may prove to be just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars a perfect title February 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It could have been easy to mess this up, but this anthology is just the perfect amount of space, whiskey, and death to chronicle a 5 star rating. Some truly exceptional stories, covering a plethora of genre niches, including my favorite (time traveling revisionist history). Not to be missed by any fan of sci/fi, horror, or fans of just a damn good read in general. Also a MUST read for anyone who has ever read any of author Vitka's other works - and if you haven't, come on already and jump in.
