Book Description

The simple-minded and the insane. Mercenaries, demons, drunks, and unstable men. The dead and living. A world full of simpletons and simple technology, but cursed with unbelievable magic and powerful warlocks.

This is the world of The Spaces Between.

Zhy, the town drunk, finds himself on a journey with a brazen mercenary and an uppity mage. They are followed by an idiot man-child, listening to voices in his head. As they creep closer to their stated goal, each man realizes he’s only a pawn in a scheme: A scheme concocted by one of the travelers.

A drunkard’s journey will begin with laughter and end in misery.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I especially enjoy reading fantasy books; I have read many, but I have to say that this one stands out of the crowd. This fast-paced book will take you on a fantastic journey of three strangers looking for a Warlock who lives in far North. You will get hooked up from the first page and the story will keep you interested and entertained until the end. This book has all a masterpiece should have: great and clean writing, the fascinating settings, original story and very, very enjoyable characters. This author is utterly talented and I hope to read more books from him in the future! --Amazon.com Reviewer

Through this fascinating fantasy runs a motif of knots and knot-tying. It's a fitting metaphor for life and death and the four elements, earth, wind, fire and water. A fearless mercenary and a drunken landowner's son -- a sort of chosen one -- set out on a quest to learn the deeper secrets of magic from a warlock who dwells in the far north. Along the way they meet all manner of creatures, magic and mortal, and adventures. The book is elegantly written und carefully edited. With his slightly baroque prose, Martin Gibbs succeeds in creating another world while preserving very tangible connections to our own world. This book is ideal for an escape into a landscape of danger and adventure. --Amazon.com Reviewer

About the Author

I am a big fan of Robert Jordan, George RR Martin, and R. Scott Bakker. I also enjoy Ellery Queen mysteries and books about Arctic survival. I'm an avid cross-country skier, mountain biker, poet, cook, and I know three chords on the guitar. Active projects include A Drunkard's Journey (Dead Spaces is coming out this spring!), an attempt at a 1930's mystery, a Christian-based piece of historical fiction, and a smattering of short stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strangely disjointed August 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I grabbed this book because it was free (to prime members) and had several good reviews. After slogging through this, I've come to believe the other reviewers didn't actually read it. The story was so-so but cliche'. The plot line contained strange references to some 'story' and the characters seeming to black out and recite lines from it (a story), but the why of this was never resolved.

Repeated descriptions of scenes from chapter to chapter made it sound like there was an echo. The character dialog seemed to me like a poor high school play production.

In a mid century agrarian type society, how did the characters have toilet paper and matches?

3.0 out of 5 stars The Spaces Between August 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
Our story follows two adventurerers making their way to a powerful Seith named Ar'Zoth. Our adventurerer's are Zhyfrael or Zhy, a local drunk, and Qainur, a mercenary, who is seeking a powerful Seith named Ar'Zoth. Zhy wonders if he's made the right decision about going to leave Belden with this young man. Zhy has nothing better to do anyway and it could be fun maybe. Qainur has all the supplies ready for their trip and is excited about starting on this adventure even if Zhy is not sure about it. Along the way, two traveler's meet up with Torplug claiming to be a mage but that remains to be seen. Torplug slowly becomes part of the two traveler's group yet keeps to himself. As the traveler's continue on their journey, they're attacked by a Gherwza and they barely manage to escape. Then the traveler's see a man possessed by a demon and they barely escape with their lives. Meanwhile Bimb and Zhy's father Lynn travel a little known tunnel to reach Zhy and his companions before meeting Ar'Zoth. Zhy and his companions have been attacked by The Knights of Black Dawn twice on their journey so far with no real explanation as to why it is so. Zhy is uneasy about seeing this Seith and doesn't understand why Qainur is hellbent on meeting this Seith. Torplug is an unknown quantity in the group although he is willing to share his opinions and thoughts about Seith yet goes about his business. Will they find Ar'Zoth? Will Ar'Zoth teach Qainur? What is Torplug hiding? Will Zhy ever be comfortable? Will Bimb and Lynn reach Zhy and his companions in time? What is Ar'Zoth planning? Your answers await you in The Spaces Between.

While reading this story, I found at times that it dragged in places where it should have been moving at a faster pace than it is going.

2.0 out of 5 stars Awkward dialog July 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Finished 30% of the sample before having to put it down. The dialog is awkward, the writing is juvenile, and there were some grammar and word choice problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fantasy Adventure January 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
From the snow banked ramparts of a centuries old fortress the warning is issued: "He comes". A drunk is recruited to go on an adventure by a mysterious warrior to find a warlock in the far north from whom he wishes to learn magic. And they are followed by another. Thus begins a journey of danger and discovery in this exciting fantasy yarn.

The Spaces Between is a well written, funny, and action packed fantasy adventure documenting the bumbling journey of an unlikely set of heros. Great fun!

I enjoyed the book very much and hightly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi Thriller August 19, 2013
By Tyler
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought this book took a page out George Lucas's book because this science fiction fantasy thriller knew how to use unique dialogue combined with the adventureous and fascinating characters that took me away from the everyday normalcy of life and common stories. The author, Martin Gibbs, truly is an on-the-rise author that's aiming to prove something to his audience. From the action-packed sequences to the characters masterfully created personalities, I was stuck going 100 MPH through this whole book. As we go on to follow the quest of the two protagonists, we're led to believe that there truly lies the deeper secrets of the magic underworld that only the Warlock knows about from the far North. As you can see, this unique novel is for the adventuresome and bold.

I really did love this novel! From the beginning to the end, it really did give me something different to read about. Get it now!
