Book Description

October 4, 2011
From the team that brought you SparkPeople.com, America’s #1 weight-loss and fitness site, and the New York Times bestseller The Spark, comes The SparkPeople Cookbook. This practical yet inspirational guide, which is based on the same easy, real-world principles as the SparkPeople program, takes the guesswork out of making delicious, healthy meals and losing weight—once and for all.
Award-winning chef Meg Galvin and SparkRecipes editor Stepfanie Romine have paired up to create this collection of more than 160 satisfying, sustaining, and stress-free recipes that streamline your healthy-eating efforts. With a focus on real food, generous portions, and great flavor, these recipes are not part of a fad diet. They aren’t about spending money on obscure ingredients, eliminating key components of a balanced diet, or slaving away for hours at the stove. They are about making smart choices and eating food you love to eat.
But this is more than just a collection of recipes—it’s an education. The SparkPeople philosophy has always been about encouraging people to achieve personal goals with the help and support of others. And this cookbook works in the just the same way. Along with the recipes, you’ll find step-by-step how-tos about the healthiest, most taste-enhancing cooking techniques; lists of kitchen essentials; and simple ingredient swaps that maximize flavor, while cutting fat and calories, plus you’ll read motivational SparkPeople success stories from real members who have used these recipes as part of their life-changing transformations.
     In addition, you’ll find:
·         Quick and tasty “Make It a Meal” suggestions to turn every main dish into a well-balanced meal.
·         Results from the SparkPeople “Ditch the Diet” Taste Test, which proves that you don’t have to eat boring and tasteless food to lose weight.
·         150 meal ideas and recipes that take 30 minutes or less to prepare—plus dozens of other, more elaborate meals for days when you have more time to cook.
·         Two weeks of meal plans—with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two snacks—all within 1,400–1,600 calories per day.
So whether you’re a novice taking the first steps to improve your health or a seasoned cook just looking for new, healthy recipes to add to your repertoire, this cookbook is for you. Learn to love your food, lose the weight, and ditch the diet forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkpeople Cook Book October 10, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
***** (5 stars!!!)

Honesty this is the BEST cook book I have ever bought in my life, I kid you not! I love cook books, so yeah, the island in my kitchen in the cabinet it is filled with cook books. I just love this cook book. It is filled with all kinds of information which will help you live a healthier lifestyle, and all kinds of good recipes!!! Sparkpeople being as they are, they just give you more great stuff than other companies do. I have found stuff in this cook book that I have never seen in other cook books like: on page 25 there is a large section devoted to cooking low fat food that tastes great. It is filled with helpful ways to turn any recipe into a low fat lower calorie meal. Sparkpeople call this section, The Love Your Food, Lose the Weight Cooking School. Also there are many recipes which suggest other side dishes to add to the meal to make it a complete dinner. Each recipe has nutritional information per serving such as, fiber, protein, total carbs, calories, sodium, cholesterol, & total fat.

WHAT I LOVE :

Why do I love the Sparkpeople Cook Book- love your food and lose weight?:

* This cook book is dedicated to us! It says,"To SparkPeople members everywhere, and anyone who thought they had to give up the food they love to be healthy."

* I just LOVE that in each recipe they tell you how big one serving size is, so you know without a doubt just how big/small one serving size REALLY is. For example on page 231 for the recipe, Tuna Noodle Casserole (which is 307 calories per serving and looks and sounds great!) makes 4 servings and each serving is 1 1/2 cups.

* I love the suggestions they give you on how to create a shopping list. I hate to shop for groceries.

I've been a longtime SparkPeople fan so was very excited to see their cookbook released. I was not disappointed!

What really surprised me though was how good the food tasted, while still staying lower in calories, and even in sodium (which I've been keeping an eye on). Overall the recipes were pretty easy and quick to make, which was helped by simple descriptions and photos. I've only tried a few recipes, but my favorites so far are the "Baked Sunburst Fries" (my kids love them too) and the quick and simple Pad Thai. I look forward to trying more soon, and will try to update my review at that time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Healthy + Delicious = Win October 4, 2011
By Timothy
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Definitely recommend this Cookbook for anyone (like our family) who wants to get better at healthy cooking/eating, but not at the expense of good taste! So many great recipes to choose from (and great pictures), along with; some really helpful tips for cooking techniques to enhance flavor (without fat), a really cool ingredient swap chart, some meal plans, and even inspiring success stories of people who were able to lose weight (without a boring/bland diet)!

So far the Slow-cooker Salsa Chicken is my favorite (and one the whole family loves)!

I have been on SparkPeople for 4 yrs. now and have lost 100 lbs. 13 of those lbs. were lost after incorporating the recipes in the SparkPeople Cookbook. I have always loved the Spark recipes, but what an indulgence to have them all in a book on my shelf where I don't need to go online to get them. Also - my husband used to be our family "cook" - now I'm the cook! I never thought my favorite smoothie would consist of spinach, but the recipe for the Berry Green Smoothie in this cookbook is now my favorite drink and I've made it for friends and family and they agree. Great ideas on how to save money while shopping and eating healthy and also how to pack a healthy lunch. As a working mother that is so important to me. I recommend this cookbook for anyone at any point in their journey to lose weight, or even just to stay healthy as a family. I can't wait to make the Spring Icing Cupcakes with my girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a cookbook! October 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This should have been called a healthy cooking and eating book-it isn't just recipes. Included are different cooking methods, and why Meg and Steph changed the recipes and added/deleted ingredients.
The pages are thick and glossy, and includes a lot of photos of what the finished recipe looks like. There is more than one index, so you options to utilize to find a favorite recipe. And there are no hard to find ingredients.
I am really pleased with my copy of the cookbook, and am amazed that the price was so low in comparison to what I got. I plan to buy copies for Christmas for my two daughters!
