Book Description

February 5, 2011
In the aftermath of having survived an encounter with pedophile serial killer Uriah Beek almost three years earlier, two still healing couples reconnect at Christmas time in the small Oregon coast city of Cutter Point. Kevin Kearnes, the city's former police chief, now a special agent with Homeland Security, is returning to Cutter Point with Britt McGraw and his two young sons to marry Britt on the same beach where he first kissed her. Thud Compton, Kearnes' old sergeant, and now Cutter Point's new chief, has invited them to stay at the Compton home. However, the Kearnes' are not the only ones traveling to Cutter Point for the holidays. Some very bad men are coming to town and instead of bearing gifts; they are planning on taking one for themselves, an old military sword from WWII rusting away inside its display case in the local library which after 9/11 is now worth a million dollars on the world black market for war artifacts. Russian mobsters "Little Nikki" Kravchenko and Vlasi Voronov will happily accept half that much in payment from Phillip Peeters, the man who has hired them to steal it, but to college student Darius Ono, who has already failed at one attempt to take it, the sword is priceless and reclaiming it will restore honor to the name of his dead great uncle "The Emperor's Sparrow." Although they don't yet know it, Kevin Kearnes and Thud Compton are about to face their greatest threat ever when they are forced to pursue the murderous men who have stolen "The Sparrow's Blade."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ken Lewis immerses you in the shattered minds and lives of two cops viciously beaten and nearly killed by a psychopathic killer. The climax of this book is as fast-paced, action-packed, and suspense-filled as a book can be."

Earl Staggs, author of Memory of a Murder

"Deeply personal and darkly suspenseful. The passion, intensity, and breakneck pace of The Sparrow's Blade makes it a worthy successor to Little Blue Whales. A must read!"

Bill Cameron, author of County Line and Day One

"An old military sword, "The Sparrow's Blade," goes missing and sets off a dangerous series of events. With two compelling main characters that drive the novel, Lewis creates a captivating mystery that is layered and rich."

Further Adventures January 5, 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback
As in this author's debut novel, "Little Blue Whales," which was warmly received, this one also takes place in Cutter City, OR, and features Kevin Kearnes and Thud Compton. It is now a few years after the harrowing experience described in the earlier book in which they were almost killed, and their roles have changed: Kearnes, the former Chief of Police, is now with the Dept. of Homeland Security in Portland, and Compton has replaced him as Police Chief.

The book opens with Kevin traveling to Cutter City with his fiancée Britt McGraw and his sons by a former marriage, to be married as well as to visit with the Comptons. Little did any of them know that a sword on display at the local library, a relic of World War II when a Japanese pilot dropped two bombs in the vicinity and then crashed, would result in the turmoil that it did when it is stolen.

The excellent portrayal of the characters, coupled with the tension of the plot, maintain reader interest on the same high level of the predecessor book. The level of writing remains at the high level of "Little Blue Whales" which presumably will continue in the forthcoming "The Helical Vane." Needless to say, Sparrow (the name for the sword, btw) is recommended.
