"I can't recommend this book highly enough"  HopUp Magazine Jan 2013 issue
First of all, the car on the cover has been in Hop Up, built by a friend of Hop Up; or you may have seen it at Lone Star Roundup.
Jim began to write the story of his "Special' build..and the story got legs, became a smash of a first novel and God knows where it will lead. Don't miss it: cars, lakes history all the right names of the pre war, wartime and immediate post war, a little bit of sex and intrigue and excellent development of characters and plots that, well, professional writers can do.

About the Author

J. E. (Jim) Pendleton was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He has had an interest in automobiles and history for most of his life. He spent several years as an SCCA road racer and a lifetime involved with hotrods. It wasn’t until after he retired from a long career in the telecommunications industry that Jim decided to pursue another of his dreams and write his first book. His first novel, The Special, was born from his love of family, hotrods and history. These are topics that are sure to be the center of future works. He is currently working on a series of novels where a young China Marine watches regional conflict explode into what becomes World War II. Jim has long considered World War II the single most important historical event of the twentieth century. His father fought in the Pacific and his uncle, Billy Pendleton is the main character in The Special and was lost in the Battle of the Atlantic. J. E. Pendleton is a member of Military Writers Society of America and LexiCon Writers Group. He still resides in Texas with his wife and family.

This book is a must-read! The author wrote an incredible story that appeals to men and women alike. Every detail is thorough, the characters are well-developed, and it flows in such a way that makes it read very easily. Whether you enjoy it for the technical aspects surrounding the race car or WWII, or are drawn by the phenomenal story of love and family, you will not be disappointed by 'The Special'.

I really enjoyed this book. I ordered the Kindle edition and after reading it, ordered the book for my husband. I was not expecting to enjoy the car parts of this book, but was drawn in despite my lack of knowledge about cars. Loved the war history and the beautiful love story.

Do you recall in the movie Titanic how we traveled back in time with Rose?

The Special takes us back in time to a time when Rosie the Riveter, rationing and Big Band music were the buzz words of the era. There were no mobile phones, no internet. Swing skirts were common on USO dance floors. Jane Russell and Joan Crawford graced the silver screen and men raced dream cars across the salt flats of California.

In this book, the plot revolves around the story of a car named The Special. But this isn’t “just” a car story. We travel back in time as we learn the story of this car and the people involved in her creation.

The author gives us a beautiful story of romance during World War II and also a solid amount of history.

There is a good amount of layers to this story as well as some unexpected moments that I totally did not see coming ahead of time. No spoilers – just read the book and enjoy the way the story flows. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

Class act read and I highly recommend.

The book is a great blend of three of most important issues in Life, Well at least in mine. Since I am a true Gearhead, to me the skill of this writer really shows because he is able to keep you interested in all three issues through out the entire book. Also being one who reads a book to get techinical information, I am guilty of reading only portions of a book. Not so here, once I started this book it was hard to put it down. Paul

I found this book to be very interesting! I spanned a time in racing that was from the very early salt flat days . It was filled with early racing drivers and high performance invovations of the early days and then there was the romance aspect of women and cars....

When it comes to race cars, J.E. Pendleton knows his stuff. Granted, I'm not a gearhead but I have a bit of knowledge about fast cars and while this isn't a 'how to' manual, Pendleton gives you enough information to set you well on the path to building your own 'Special'. He also builds a powerful romance and shows the reader how deeply the love of a family can flow.

There's a lot to love about this book. The story of Billy and Sally's relationship, how Carl's son Babe grows from a child to a man, Billy's service during WWII, and the heartbreaking ending. But it was the epilogue that gave me chills. Pendleton makes clear that the main character in this story is his Uncle Billy, but he leaves you wondering how much of the story that Babe shared is true. Because the story is so beautiful, I choose to believe that most of what Pendleton has written is real. And I suppose that's the greatest compliment a reader can offer an author: you made me believe.

Recommended to anyone who loves WWII era history, fast cars, or a great romance.

Full disclosure, I read this book before submitting it into the Kroger Bookseller Program here in the Texas area. Historical fiction has never been something I would normally pick up, but these days, I just can't find the time to do much reading at all. I'm more likely to reread a book that I adore from 20 years ago, for better or for worse.

First the cover: beautifully done, tells a story itself without being crowded or juvenile. Very pro. That might seem like a "don't judge a book by its cover" statement, but I'm afraid a lot of indie authors have a limited budget and don't take the care that a work of art requires.

It's well written, with excellent character details (but not too many) and a story that is both uplifting and charming. More than anything, you'll fall for the car in a major way. If you are a historical fiction fan, you'll love this - ESPECIALLY if WW2 is compelling content for you.

Highly recommended!

I really liked this story a lot.  Talk about stepping into a time machine – the author swept me back in time with excellent details about a much loved time in history.

I more than enjoyed this story- it is well written and contains the perfect mix of love, romance and history.  I don’t know much about car racing but the author conveyed the enthusiasm and passion that many of the characters had about racing in a way that drew me in to the book and kept me reading.

Definitely recommend this book.
