Editorial Reviews

The Spectator is a weekly delight for anyone who loves good writing, contentious opinion and hard-hitting comment.

With the finest writing on current affairs, politics, the arts, books and life, you'll read regular columnists who delight, provoke and amuse and editorial features of incredible breadth and depth. Established in 1828, The Spectator is the oldest continuously published magazine in the English language. Its taste for controversy, however, remains undiminished. There is no party line to which its writers are bound - originality of thought and elegance of expression are the sole editorial constraints. The result, week after week, is that Britain's best columnists, critics and cartoonists turn out their finest work for the magazine and give you their views unfiltered and at cask strength.

The Kindle Edition of The Spectator contains most articles found in the print edition, but will not include images or cartoons. For your convenience, issues are auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle at the same time the print edition hits the newsstand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable version of an excellent magazine November 8, 2009
I have seen reviews of Kindle magazines which reflect a general disappointment with the formatting for the Kindle. The Kindle version of The Spectator is unlikely to disappoint, except perhaps for the lack of graphics, photos and cartoons. All the main articles appear to be present with none (that I could see) of the problems some other Kindle publications have with things like apostrophes, quotes characters etc. As for the magazine content, it's a joy to be able to read political, social and other types of commentary written so well and often with much wit, and with none of the sensationilsm or cheap point scoring that make such articles in some other publications so tiresome. In short, it's bleedin' ace, mate.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a delight February 10, 2010
The Spectator is a delightful publication The articles--about books, the arts, politics and daily life in Great Britain--are very well written. I feel as if I get a good overview of British life and it reads well on the Kindle.
The tone is light and satirical and no one suggests that if one doesn't agree with a particular point of view civilization as we know it is over
I'm enjoying my (reasonably priced) subscription very much

I've had my Spectator for Kindle subscription for a few years now and when it started, it was all text, no cartoons, no crosswords, not even the competition. But I read it mainly for the columns, so I wasn't bothered, in fact, I liked the fact that there were no ads. And let's face it, the cartoons are quite lame, and expendable. But now the Kindle version has the entire contents, displays beautifully on the Kindle Fire, contains all the cartoons and crosswords, and still NO ads. Well done!

As for the content, be warned, it's a Tory-slanted publication. I lean left, but I enjoy the columns such as Real Life by Melissa Kite, Dear Mary, Wordsworth, and Deborah Ross's movie reviews, the Radio and Television columns, and the book reviews. I can do without that pompous twit Taki or the Low Life, and I generally skim past the leaders. Still, it's interesting to see what the Tory take is on various topics, but there's a limit. No Ron Liddle, thanks very much.

It has been all of my life the best magazine for opening up your mind. Courageous editing and brilliant writing make it tops in the world. It is conservative but unlike American conservative journals it does not hesitate to run alternative ideas. The writing, the columns and the reviews make it the best read you can find in a week, or, the best I have found in 50 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speccie July 6, 2014
What can you say except how much this magazine inspires, educates, entertains and provokes one on a weekly basis! I only wish we could get access to their wine club on this side of the pond....

2.0 out of 5 stars should go for a better layout June 21, 2014
By Ola Wam
Good material, except too little international affairs. The layout is in Kindle e-read version, rather than magazine layout, which makes it look a bit home made. Making the layout magazine version would lift the overall quality tremendously. Good magazine, but not for those looking for extensive analysis of international affairs. For that I can only recommend magazines such as The Economist or The Global Intelligence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speccie is terrific. March 12, 2014
I think this is the best magazine in the world. I've been reading it for decades but had to let my subscription lapse because of the cost. The reduced cost on my Kendle solved that problem.
