This book is very disappointing. Although it goes into good depth, that depth is on a very, very limited number of stones/minerals. On top of that, there isn't a single color illustration in the whole book! This appears to be a book that was written decades ago, due to the B&W and the fact that it's missing many, many modern stones. It will be a fair resource for very common stones, but my quest for a color, modern, fairly complete reference regarding the spectra of stones continues. I strongly advise you to make sure that you buy this from Amazon or a seller with a good return policy...you will most likely be disappointed like I was.

Spectrometry analysis depends upon positions within the spectrum and color relationships when contrasted with a light source spectrum. To publish a book that neglects one half of the topic is unworthy of the authors. This book should be reprinted with all spectrums in full color as the original photos must have shown. It would move from ho-hum to excellent. Phil O.

The only reasons it doesn't get 5 stars is because:
a) the spectra are printed in black & white;
b) the aim of the book is all towards the already expert user: there are little or no hints for using the spectroscope for the beginning professional or for the student: a chapter dedicated to that and a few sparse comments would have been much appreciated.

This book is a total waste of money and nobody should buy it. None of the spectrographs are in color and even the the black and white spectrograph skectches are of inferior quality and of no use to the user of the book.

This book has a lot of information about the theory behind the spectroscope and the history of spectroscopy. if you want that then it might be a great book for you.

However, it does not explain or show you how to use a spectroscope to observe a gem. How to place the gem, where to place the light, what type of light should be used, how to make the observation. These are not explained. Not one illustration showing a light, gem and observer. So, this book is only good for someone who already knows how to use a spectroscope.

Also, ALL of the spectra are black and white illustrations. Not one color illustration in this book that is all about color. The only color is on the cover.
