More About the Author

Michael Furman's artistry in capturing the romance, power, glamour and extraordinary design of notable cars, from classic-era prewar coachbuilt automobiles through to the present day, has brought him acclaim as the world's preeminent fine art automotive photographer. His proprietary studio techniques and unsurpassed visual craftsmanship create an almost tactile level of nuance and color while faithfully capturing the authentic visage of each car, producing images of exacting realism as seen through the eyes of a great artist.

An award-winning writer and publisher, Furman's work has been featured in both classic car journals and leading popular media. He often collaborates with major museums and notable collectors, such as when he photographed "Speed, Style and Beauty, the Cars of the Ralph Lauren Collection", for The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The imprint he founded, Coachbuilt Press, produces volumes widely considered as among the most beautiful and important fine art photography and automobile books ever published. Architectural Digest described "Curves of Steel" as "Filled with sensuous photographs." Library Journal said of "The Art and Colour of General Motors," "A stunning visual history of the company and its most notable cars...Michael Furman's technically exquisite studio photographs of classic cars capture the vehicles' grace and elegance...a strikingly beautiful and substantive history of GM. Highly recommended." And Automobile Quarterly called "Automobiles of the Chrome Age" "A bound compilation of one of the day's most accomplished image gurus."

Recent titles have included the three book series for The Mullin Automotive Museum, "Spirit of Competition" for The Simeone Museum and "Automotive Jewelry, Volume One; Mascots, Badges" released at Pebble Beach in August 2013.

Furman lives and works in Philadelphia, his hometown.

Michael Furmans name became the brand in automotive photography. Whenever I see the new release with Michael Furmans photography, I am buying it without seeing. However, this book is less attractive than other Michael Furmans publications.

The books of Delahaye and Delage Styling and Design with Michael's extraordinary photographs are the top of the line of automotive photography; the books are artworks by themselves.
Automobile of Chrome Age or Motorcars of Classic Era, Speed, Stile & Beauty or Curves of Steel much better publications with much better quality; however their price is 1/3 of this book.

Some of the most beautiful cars in The Spirit of Competition have only rear side photograph or the photograph is too small. I wish them all to be in same format or scale, have the side, front, rear view and perspective.

The paper quality of The Spirit of Competition is ok but not the best and heavy as in previous Michael Furmans publications.

I live near the museum and have seen the collection in both forms.

This book goes way beyond any expectations I had for a printed representation of the collection.

Any one that has been lucky enough to meet Dr Simeone, knows that he is as much a part of this collection as any one of the cars. This comes through in the book. The book not only represents one off pictorial representations of these rare cars, it captures Dr. Simeone philosophy and long life passion for the cars and his reason for collecting. This passion goes back to his father. The history even further.

Michael Furman's photography is excellent

Might be the best car book I have ever owned.

The Spirit of Competition
by Frederick A Simeone, MD

Neurosurgeon Fred Simeone's philosophy toward collecting can be summed up by what he refers to as "The Automotive Hippocratic Oath: Do no harm to historically accurate artifacts." The Philadelphia museum housing his racing sportscar collection is now open to the public and is becoming a magnet destination for enthusiasts.

In this latest effort from Coachbuilt Press, Michael Furman's exquisite photographs are used to complement Dr Simeone's knowledge and enthusiasm as he leads the reader on a virtual tour of the Museum. The great rivalries from each era are all there; from Stutz and Mercer, Vauxhall and Bentley, Bugatti and Alfa Romeo, Allard and Cunningham, Jaguar and Ferrari, culminating with the Ford Mk IV and Porsche 917. The Spirit of Competition showcases examples in the collection that chronicle the evolution of the racing sportscar, but the book is much more than a museum catalog. Using period photographs and road tests or driving impressions from publications of the era, the history of each car is revealed, along with its significance in the sport's progress. The author describes his search for unmolested examples of desired cars, the eventual acquisition, and his painstaking efforts to maintain or restore operational function without compromising originality. While competition is the central theme, with actual Le Mans and Mille Miglia winners prominently displayed, there is also room for the less successful but visually exciting Auburn Speedsters, and the gorgeous short-wheelbase Squire prototype.

Dr Simeone makes no apologies for what some may see as obvious gaps in the collection.

I bought this book as a Valentine's Day gift for my boyfriend who is an avid car lover and who has visited the museum and met Dr. Simeone. He was very impressed with the photography, the collection of old photographs and with the meticulously detailed information included with every car in the collection.
