Editorial Reviews

The Spirit Indestructible is Nelly Furtado's first English-language studio album since 2006's double-platinum Loose, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, was certified multi-platinum in 32 countries, and sold 10 million copies worldwide. Loose also spawned three hit singles, including the No. 1's Promiscuous and Say It Right, both of which earned Furtado Grammy Award nominations.

The Canadian-born singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist, who is of Portuguese descent, has enjoyed a vibrant and successful career as a multi-language superstar. By embracing different cultures and genres, she has helped define musical diversity for a new generation ever since unleashing her debut, 2000's double-platinum Whoa, Nelly!, which spawned I'm Like A Bird, followed by 2003's gold Folklore, whose Forca became the official anthem of the 2004 European Cup Football Championship.

In 2009, she released her first Spanish-language album, the Latin Grammy Award-winning Mi Plan, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Latin Billboard chart and swept Canada's Juno awards with five wins including Album of the Year.

In total, Furtado has sold more than 16 million albums and 18 million singles worldwide. She has racked up many international honors, including a Grammy Award, a BRIT Award, a Latin Grammy Award, World Music Award and 10 Juno awards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nelly on Top September 18, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Last night, I bought the Killers', Kanye's, Pink's and Nelly's new albums. This is the one that has been on repeat. I think unlike most people, my favorite Nelly songs are all from her albums that weren't "Loose." "Loose" in my opinion was an attempt to be more commercial that in many ways downplayed all of the things that made Nelly unique. She became just another pop star. I get why she did it though--she had never been able to find that balance of catchy commercial songs that were still interesting and complex. This is the album where everything changes.

This album showcases Nelly's adventurous nature and willingness to takes risks. She does massive British drum and bass club bangers right next to introspective almost Middle Eastern & Latin flavored ballads. This album has shades of reggae, electro, rock, funk and even folk. While Nelly isn't always successful in trying to marry all these genres together--it's ridiculous fun to listen to her try. The sheer amount of variety she was able to achieve yet still give this album a cohesive sound and feel is astonishing. As of now, favorite tracks are "High Life", "Parking Lot" and "Miracles."

Lyrically, she's sarcastic, meditative and real. I love that her lyrics actually reflect her age(somewhat older at 33) and experiences instead of trying to sound like she's still 21 (cough, cough Avril...) Her very unique voice (somewhat nasally and stylized at times) is showcased quite well throughout. You can't listen to these songs and not tell that it's Nelly singing. The thing that annoyed me the most about this album though is the number of times that she or others are simply talking at the beginnings or ends of tracks. It made it sound too much like a live recording for my taste.

Unfortunately, Nelly hasn't been on the mainstream charts for years. And it's a real shame that this album hasn't been getting more attention when in fact, it's one of the smartest as well as instantly listenable pop albums of the year. Fans of artists like M.I.A. or Santigold as well as literally any current mainstream artist should all love this album. I dare you not to dance upon listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Listeners Entangled September 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Those who will look for more Timbaland-produced Nelly Furtado of her 2006 smash "Loose" are probably in for a disappointment, as there is no "Maneater", "Promiscuous" or "Say It Right" here - but as the title is probably suggesting, the 2012 offering is more about the spirit than the carnal. Nelly Furtado, who started her career more than 10 years ago (!), proves again that of all the pop stars having come into prominence at the beginning of the millennium, she is bound to have a real longevity - regardless of commercial success.
Lovers of current minimalistic pop will probably love the album, as there is a lot of very simple and easy-to-remember hooks on the album. Still, the production is so sophisticated, that almost each song eventually weaves a seductive web of sounds, which in the end draws the listener in. This applies even to some tunes that sound as if taken directly from her 2003 album Folklore (as the rather long "Parking Lot"). Palette of colors and sounds is unusually varied for a mainstream pop album of 2010's, influences probably include the likes of M.I.A. as well. The politically-charged anthem "Believers (Arab Spring)" ranks among the best hits of the day and lifts the album to another level with its meaningful message, betraying Furtado as the acute obserever of the current world affairs.
"The Spirit Indestructible" is an above-average pop album and a grower. Nelly Furtado confirms she has found her style, which suits her just fine - it may not be "indestructible", but is close to "inimitable".

4.0 out of 5 stars Indestructible September 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I was so worried Nelly was going to come back with a dance record, just like everyone else has. Even Hip Hop and RnB artists are using dance as a way to guarantee a sure-fire hit.
By not going down this familiar route Nelly has done two things. Firstly, she has created the most original album of the past 3 years by side-stepping dance and bringing back the pop/urban/soulful sound and secondly she has shot herself in the foot by not going down this route - meaning, potentially, the album will sink without trace in the charts as urban music just isn't selling right now.
Despite this, the record is an incredible journey and each song works well with the next with some clever interludes which really bridge the songs well.
I wasn't impressed with Big Hoops (Bigger The Better) but in the context of the rest of the album it works really well and I actually enjoy this song now.

Highly recommend this album if you are a fan of Nelly, a fan of Urban music and are desperately bored of the pop/dance sound as I am.

I have a feeling in 5 years we're going to look back and go "Damn, she was ahead of the game."
