NLO Xmas,

Given the enormous success of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, it was only a matter of time before someone attempted to take a piece of the proverbial yule log for themselves. Bearing a striking resemblance to TSO in both name and sound, Northern Light Orchestra wraps the timeless music of Christmas and electrifying classic rock up into a fanciful present that will outlast any toy in Santa's sack. 17 original seasonal delights book-ended by the irresistible 'Celebrate Christmas' and majestic 'Bye Bye Bethlehem'. Those contributing to this winter riff-land include: George Lynch (Dokken), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Dizzy Reed (Guns N' Roses), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), Bruce Kulick (KISS), Kip Winger (Winger), Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot), Jason Hook (Alice Cooper), to name but a few. Unfortunately, the cover art looks more like a melting iceberg than anything to do with traditional holiday festivities, but it's the music that matters most. And this lends truth to the old adage that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Yes, TSO comparisons are unavoidable, but just as each shopping mall has a jolly old fat man in a red suit and white beard, there's room for more than one Christmas soundtrack. So break out the eggnog, hang the stockings with care and revel in near magical melodies devoted to the birth of Jesus Christ.

Being a huge fan of TSO, I didn't think I'd ever find another band to match their mix of rock/metal and Christmas. Well here it is. This band and this CD are excellent. Agreat mix of metal and Christmas. The musicianship is outstandind as well as the song writing. So if you want to rock out on your Christmas, get this CD.

And they do it excellently. They rock as well as anybody or any band around. A number of these folks have played with various bands of renown in their career before embarking on a Christian singing career. Some are still in secular rock. Put it in, turn it up and enjoy.

Some more symphonic Christmas rock/metal for TSO fans.,

The comparisons to TSO (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) are unavoidable, both bands draw from the same pedigree,(80's rock and metal musicians). Both bands have well known and world renowned musicians, and both do a symphonic rock/metal style with plenty of lead guitar. NLO is maybe a little heavier at times and a little less symphonic than TSO, but they're both basically the same style.
What I like about NLO (other than the fact they're very good) is that they're not a ripoff and they try to do something different with the arrangements, so the ripoff cries are a little unfair. That and TSO isn't completely original either, in the long run who really is? I'm more interested in the music and if the music is good, I like it (original or not). NLO is very good and their two cds are also very cheap. Check these guys out if you like symphonic rock/metal with awesome musicianship that glorifies Jesus Christ!!! |
