4.0 out of 5 stars Very Practical
As good practical view of his method of enlightenment. Much of the book is in Q&A format.
Talks about the role of Ego as hindrance. The key seems to be to stop the mind thinking.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enlightening read, January 10, 2007
This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
The book is nicely organized into questions and answers. This book is a very concise resource for those interested in the advaita-vedanta philosophy of Ramana. Readers who are accustomed to Ramana's previous books might find this a very exciting addition to their collection, primarily beacuse of the crisp nature Ramana's answers. For the beginner, it might take a little time to get used to the Q and A format. But this can be overcome by brooding over the question for a while before reading Ramana's reply. I would recommend this book to any person interested in the philosophy of existence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book, May 20, 2006
By
This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
This book gives a great introduction to the wonderful guru, Sri Ramana Maharshi. "Who am I?" Ask yourself that question and go as deeply as you can with the answers until you find the true self. That's just for starters.

This book will help the reader find clarity of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best introductory book on Sri Ramana, March 14, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
This book is by far the best introductory book on Sri Ramana's teachings. The contents are in Question and Answer format. After reading this book, most readers would want a practical book which puts Sri Ramana's teachings together in a logical and practical format and also would want to start practicing self-enquiry. For them I recommend the book 'Path of Sri Ramana, Part I' by Sri Sadhu Om. (Sri Sadhu Om is a direct disciple of Sri Ramana and also the closest associate of Sri Ramana's foremost disciple, Sri Muruganar). 'Path of Sri Ramana, part one' is by far the best practical book on Ramana's teachings. It walks you through the logic behind self-enquiry step-by-step and then, in the final chapter, describes the technique of self-enquiry. You should be able to start practicing after reading this book.

To those who want to read the original works of Sri Ramana with excellent commentary, I recommend the following books:

1. Upadesa Undiyar of Bhagavan Sri Ramana: "The Song of Siva". By Sri Sadhu Om and Michael James. Second edition, published 2004 by Sri Ramana Kshetra - Kanvashrama Trust. This book contains the thirty verses which are the essence of Sri Ramana's teachings. The book contains original Tamil verses, word for word English translation, followed by a running translation of the entire verse. All verses also have excellent explanatory notes.

2. Sri Arunachala Stuti Panchakam: Commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. 2007, Published by Kanvashrama Trust, Tiruvannamalai - 606 603: This book contains the five songs sung by Sri Ramana in praise of Sri Arunachala (the name given to God in Thiruvannamalai). The book has the original Tamil verses, word for word English translation, followed by a running translation. Some verses also have explanatory notes by Sri Sadhu Om.

3. Sri Ramanopadesa Noonmalai: Commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. 2007. Published by Kanvashrama Trust, Tiruvannamalai - 606 603: This book contains the philosophical writings of Sri Ramana (excluding the Upadesa Undiyar, which is contained in book # 1 above). It consists of the original Tamil verses, word for word English translation, followed by a running translation. Almost all verses also have commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. Commentaries are the very best available.

4. Guru Vachaka Kovai: by Sri Muruganar, Translation and commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. 2013 (Second edition). Published by Sri Arunachala Ramana Nilayam. Guru Vachaka Kovai is the most comprehensive and most authentic collection of Sri Ramana's teachings. (There are close to 1300 verses!) The verses in this book were recorded by his foremost disciple, Sri Muruganar, and thoroughly reviewed by Sri Ramana himself. The Maharishi also added some new verses to this collection. Many verses have commentary by either Sri Muruganar or Sri Sadhu Om.

However, if you want only one single follow up book to 'The spiritual teaching of Ramana Maharshi', then that would be 'Path of Sri Ramana, Part I' by Sri Sadhu Om.

Sri Ramana sums up the principal things which the Spirit of India has accumulated during thousands of years in contemplation of yhr Inner Self. The individual life and work of the Maharshi exemplifies the innermost striving of the Indian people to find the liberating original Source.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, August 12, 2012
This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
This book deals with IMO the greatest sage of the 20th century. It really is comprised of two works, the first titled "Who Am I?", which is free to read online, and the second being Maharshi Gospel, which is available to purchase individually as well.

Yes ... You will enjoy this. The best of this Mystics works in one place. Nothing too lengthy and the broad spectrum of topics covers the majority of human experiences. I return to this again and again.

This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
"The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi" may be of inestimable value to intermediate and advanced spiritual seekers, but, without equivocation, most of the messages in this book are way, way over my head. While learning about this saint from other sources including some videos, it is apparent to me that he is extremely advanced and is therefore in such an exulted state that presenting truths to an exceptionally untried seeker (like myself) may be a bit challenging; akin to Stephen Hawking describing "M Theory" to a frog. In many ways this work is congruent with "The Holy Science" in as much as it reads like an auto repair manual. Also, I'm not typically a great fan of dialectic (i.e. question and answer) type of works - they just seem cumbersome.

I'm sure that this book will have much value to other readers that are more spiritually mature than I am, but for me 3 stars on the board and a real 2.5 is all I can give.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience it Now - Enlightenment is Possible, June 26, 2014
This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
A marvelous book.
Ramana was fully enlightened - having achieved "God Realization"

If any sincere seeker here wishes to attain a state relatively close to this (or at least a deep and profound state of meditation), let me know.
Yes, it is truly possible here and now - and many have achieved that 'witness state' where we truly "see" the "Matrix" that humans live within, and perceive the underlying unity of all existence. It is a state of bliss that cannot be described, but has to be experienced.

Finally, as with something genuinely spiritual, there in absolutely no fee (nor any "donation") for this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ramana Teaching, December 25, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi (Paperback)
While reading other works of Ramana, such as Talks, this is the best I have read as a succinct overview of his Teaching, and of Advaita (NonDuality). Each segment is an introduction to one vital aspect of the over-all Teaching, and each segment brief enough to be read in a matter of minutes. Reading Ramana is like sitting in the Presence of True Holiness: the spirit through the writings, that of Ramana and others like him, enhacing the wisdom and impressing it mysteriously upon the Heart: or as Ramana would say, the Guru pushing from without, the Guru pulling from within. OM Shanti
