Product Description

The Nickelodeon series "Spongebob Squarepants"--a sharp, funny cartoon that attracts more viewers than any other program on the channel and has spawned a $2 billion-a-year franchise--reaches the big screen with The Sponge Boy SquarePants Movie. Its album features music written for the animation plus live action film and perfrormed by a Modern Rock roster appealing to the show's college audience, including The Flaming Lips, Wilco, The Shins and The Dust Brothers' Mike Simpson. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Music From the Movie and More-slated to be in a bright yellow jewel case-is destined to be that rare soundtrack that is both a favorite of kids and a college cult classic.

Amazon.com

There's an ocean of reasons Nickelodeon fans and moviegoers will want to own the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie soundtrack, not least of which is its cover art. Even if such aesthetic considerations bore you--even if the movie itself bores you, you'll want to dive right in, because the packaging pales in comparison to the content. Skate-punk queen Avril Lavigne cranks up the guitars for a caffeinated cover of the cartoon theme; the Flaming Lips figure out what happens when "SpongeBob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy;" alt-rock heroes Wilco revisit music simpler than what's on their latest discs with "Just a Kid;" and indie rockers the Shins let it rip on "They'll Soon Discover." Lesser-known acts Ween and Electrocute also contribute, and they're matched in the keep-up-the-tempo challenge by characters including Patrick. His track, the barely listenable "Under My Rock," earns him the dubious distinction of the disc's biggest bellyflopper, but overall audiences will be squeezed to find a recent soundtrack as absorbing. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews

Makes you kinda wanna sway to the music (hehehe... like seaweed in the ocean).
Billy
My favorite track is "Under my rock", I just cracked up when Patrick said "or eat a piece of pie in". "Best Day Ever" is a really good song to cheer you up.
Julia
It took the movie forever to come out, and just as good as this movie is, the soundtrack was just as good at the same time.

This soundtrack is SO much fun! Oh, I can't wait for the movie on November 19. Let's start with the first track, 'SpongeBob SquarePants Theme' by Avril Lavigne. It's actually pretty good. Has a modern touch to the Hawaiian-sounding TV theme.

Track No. 2, 'SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy'. This is a great song. Very laid back. Makes you kinda wanna sway to the music (hehehe... like seaweed in the ocean). And I love the title. The Flaming Lips are pretty good.

Track No. 3, 'Just a Kid', by Wilco. Great guitar intro. It fits right in with the rest of the songs.

Track No. 4, 'The Goofy Goober Song'. OH MY GOD! This song is so infectious. And very simple to learn. "I'm a Goofy Goober Yeah You're a Goofy Goober Yeah We're all Goofy Goober's Yeah Goofy Goofy Goober Goober Yeah!" This has become my favorite track on the entire CD.

Track No. 5, 'Prince Paul's Bubble Party', by Prince Paul, The Waikikis, & Wordsworth. A great little rap song which is just an overview of the episode "Bubblestand", with actual sound clips. Great fun!

Track No. 6, 'Bikini Bottom' by Electrocute. Great song with a great sound. Amazingly fun to dance and sing to.

Track No.'s 7-14, 'The Best Day Ever', 'They'll Soon Discover', 'Ocean Man', 'Under My Rock', 'Now That We're Men', 'Goofy Goober Rock', 'You Better Swim', and 'The Jellyfish Song by the Jellyfish Band'. There were too many tracks to review individually, so I lumped 7-14 into one review. These songs sound great and are really fun to dance to.

Track No. 15, 'SpongeBob SquarePants Theme(Movie Version)'. LOL! This is great. It's sung by The Pirates and sounds orchestral, which it is, since the music is performed by an orchestra. But, it's funny.

I am a closet SpongeBob fan (and probably not the only one), due to my kids TV and movie watching habits. I've seen the movie 3 times, heard the soundtrack once and decided I had to have it (for the kids of course). My favorite cut is SB himself singing "Best Day Ever." This is without a doubt the cutest, happiest, and most Beach Boys-esque song ever recorded (hats off the the brilliant production team who obviously spent many hours listening to Pet Sounds). Many of the other cuts are quite good, including the Wilco and Electrocute songs. A couple of exceptions: Patrick the Starfish cannot sing a note, and I defy anyone over 30 to listen to this for longer than 1 minute. The Motorhead song also, well, sucks (fortunately I can hit FF faster than my kids noticed I skipped 'em). If you want a fun, upbeat, catchy CD to listen to with your kids in the car this is it.

The person below obviously doesn't know anything about good music. Some very good bands were selected for this album. Allow me to show you...*Ahem* MY REVIEW

Track 1: Spongebob Squarepants Theme (Avril Lavigne) - I don't like Avril Lavigne, but this version of the theme song is OK. Could be better but her voice kind of ruins it. 2/5

Track 2: Spongebob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy (The Flaming Lips) - A very nice, happy sounding peaceful song. This is one of the best on the whole album. I love the way it's sung. The music video is also good. 5/5

Track 3: Just a Kid (Wilco) - A REALLY catchy song. I like the part where the weird kids come in singing "Na na na na na na na na na!" This is fun to listen to. 4/5

Track 4: The Goofy Goober Song (Mike Simpson) - Just like what Mr. Tex said, this is my favorite on the album and is irresistibly catchy. I really like the drum & bass parts, and I LOVE the demented little children in the background going "Blah blah blah blah blah blah". This is hilarious. 6/5

Track 5: Prince Paul's Bubble Party (The Waikikis, Prince Paul & Wordsworth) - I don't really like rap music, but this track is somewhat decent. Most of it is samples from the Bubble Stand episode of Spongebob Squarepants. 3/5

Track 6: Bikini Bottom (Electrocute) - I really don't like this one. It's too poppy and happy and annoying. The only thing that saves this from getting 0 is the fact that I like the keyboard parts. 1/5

Track 7: The Best Day Ever (SpongeBob) - A fun bouncy song with a mix of instruments. Sounds kind of like The Beach Boys. The only thing I really don't like about is SpongeBob's voice.

When I say that, I mean that about EVERY single song on this soundtrack is a different "story" about Spongebob in the bands' own ways. That's not necessarily a bad thing at all. The movie was a bit better. My favorite song is by the Flaming Lips, probably because of the way the song goes and sounds. I guess the entire cd is cool to listen to, and I am very fond of the Flaming Lips song. I really need to find one of their own albums....Most of the other songs also have Spongebob and Patrick singing. I'd prefer ones with the bands, {only they don't sing in a much different catagory, just a little more mature-like}. You can see enough of them singing in the cartoon and in the movie. I noticed how some other cds don't, or sometimes don't even mention anything of the movies that they're inspired by, or have the characters present in any of the songs. I can also see why the makers of the movie and this cd wouldn't have much else to sing about other than the main characters and the plot. Most soundtracks don't. It's not all that bad, come to think of it. It's actually better compared to a few other soundtracks that weren't that good. This was. I'd have to enjoy most bands on the soundtracks to generally like the whole thing. Although most bands/artists on this cd I am not too familiar with, it's somewhat worth listening to for the fun of it. Hope this helped.
