Book Description

After seeing God and then the Devil, Jacob Abrams makes a decision: No more drugs. Fresh out of high school, Abrams decides to join the Army, thinking it would be a good new beginning. He's wrong.

After some serious screw-ups, Abrams gets transferred to a base in the middle of nowhere where he is trained to do dangerous house-to-house searches. As a final exam, he and his team are ordered to sweep and clear what appears to be a stereotypical "haunted house.” Trapped inside, he realizes to his horror why he and these men were chosen for this mission – The Army expects no one to get out of this house alive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different than expected April 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The excerpt provided lead me to believe the novel would revolve around Jacob Abrams' military duty. It took longer to get into that portion than I was expecting, though the leading portion was important to the storyline even though it didn't seem that it was going to tie in.

Pros: The basic premise that The Spook House referenced could potentially happen in the future, may have already happened in the past, or could even be happening now. That alone creates a layer of horror. The majority of the characters were believable and from descriptions of their pasts were responsive in a way I would have expected. Time flowed well for the most part, and the author explained time shifts as he made them. I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals created while the characters were inside The Spook House - kept me reading 'just one more page.'

Cons: A run-through by a final editor would be helpful in tightening up the errors in writing that are evident throughout. I also found the main character slightly two-dimensional and not quite believable as a 16-, 17- or 18-year-old male. Having said that, I've never been a teenage male, so take that for what you will. There are also a couple of instances that are repeated more often than necessary in my view.

As this was gifted to me with a request for an honest review, that's what it will get. Overall, I believe it has a good running start at being a very good story with a bit more review and editing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Book I've Read This Year May 13, 2013
By Dave
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As I said, this is the worst book I've read this year, but it is only May, so there is hope.

Why was it so bad? Nothing was believable. The military scenes stretched credulity to the point of breaking; the horror scenes did as well, even though horror (or at least supposed supernatural horror) is supposed to be beyond belief, and finally, the supernatural/metaphysical encounters did as well.

Oh, and of course there were the typical mis-spellings, and grammatical errors (your/you're, they're/their/there, etc...) but I've come to expect those at this point, and they don't bother me all that much anymore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read! February 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Quite nicely presented with few editing issues (mostly typos I think). Liked the characters (Ashiera was very entertaining!).
Happy to recommend for both a thought-provoking and entertaining read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Read April 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this book interesting because of the unexpected mix of supernatural, military and scientific elements. I was unsure at first, as my initial thoughts were that it was taking to long to fall together and I felt like there was a bit of information overload. But trust me, it all comes together and the more you read, the more you understand the authors need to have provided all this background. Overall a pleasant read as once I got half way through, I found it impossible to put down. The ending was also unexpectedly different and pleasant. It would be nice to have a follow up novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure what to think February 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book has left me a good way....I think.

I am really not sure what my reaction to this book actually is or how I actually feel about it. It is well written, spooky as hell and I couldn't put it down...but some of the ideas are kinda off the wall and out there....or are they? At the beginning of the book I started to think the author had a screw (or two) loose but as the story went on I started to see his point of view. This book will really make you wonder how much we don't know about the military and their "secret missions" not to mention I have had the thought that we are all "ants in the ant farm on Gods desk" once or twice.....

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

4.0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING! October 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I first started reading this book I wasn't sure where it was going. Then it got into military issues and that's when the "spook house" got going. I really enjoyed this aspect of the book. It is scary enough what the military could be doing whether we are looking at fiction or not. Interesting concept!

I am frequently impressed by the quality of writing in a book from an unknown author (or an author without a large publishing company behind them).

This is a very good story. An interesting twist on the basic story. I found it hard to put down until I was completely finished. I hope there is a follow-on book.

This reminded me of Cabin in the Woods, which is a very good thing. A fire team is tested in a unusual battleground.

After spending a lifetime of amusing myself with spontaneous stories and fantasies, I'm attempting to share (and hopefully profit from) my talent for storytelling. Originally interested in doing movie special effects, I worked briefly for an animation company. With professional experience and a lot of coursework, I became a Photoshop expert, which led to a career in marketing and advertising.

While I have travelled extensively, I've spent my life and career in the bay area. I am a native Californian, and I love the weather and being outdoors. I need the exercise and outdoor activity to balance out the time I spend writing, reading, doing digital photography, and using Apple products and Photoshop.

I balance all of this with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which I've trained in for over 11 years, and by spending time with my family. I currently live in Campbell, California.
