The Sportsman is a seemingly honest account of Dhani Jones' travel experiences while filming Dhani Tackles the Globe. It ties together these experiences with his career as a veteran NFL player, including stories from his childhood and the path he took to get to this point in his life. Letters from his parents, agent, coaches, and trainer add a personal touch to this book. Dhani emphasizes throughout the book that being healthy and physically fit, including NFL ready, isn't limited to the weight-room but can be accomplished through many modalities. Dhani's stories reach a variety of audiences, including travelers, athletes, NFL fans, and those simply wanting a peek into the life of a pro-footballer. Dhani's "voice" is present throughout the book. He stresses the importance of thoughtful traveling no matter where you are in the world, including embracing the culture and stepping outside your own comfort zone. It is good to hear from an athlete who strives to lead a thoughtful life and inspire others in a positive way. Fans of Dhani Jones, as well as those who simply love to travel, will enjoy reading about his experiences, and how he balanced traveling the world with his NFL career. As a person who loves to travel, but hasn't in awhile, I finished the book with that "travel spark" lit again, and felt the need to reach for my passport and experience new adventures.

I decided to buy this book because I hoped to regain some of the feeling you got watching Dhani Tackles the Globe. It was a show my whole family loved to watch together. What a sweet friendly engaging man. He was a great emissary for the US.
This book did not dissapoint. If anything it gives an even more complete view by revealing his internal voice and motivations. I especially liked the quotes from the important people in his life. Here is hoping he gets another show or writes another book. My husband daughters and I will gladly tune in.

I read this book as one of the many books I have checked out to help me find some inspiration, great quotes, food for thought, and just working on finding examples of being GETTING IT DONE(my new blog post series and hopefully future book).
I enjoyed this book. I pulled out some good quotes and ideas from Dhani Jones as he discusses his life as a professional football player and also pursuing his other passions in life. He is trying to make a statement that there is more to him than just football.
What I liked best about the book is that many different sports were introduced from the countries that he traveled to for the show. In the end, Dhani was able to take away a new respect for the sports and also realizing that his training for football was not undermined. This was important because I think that young players need to realize that lifting weights is not the only way to strengthen the body and mind. It is very important, but working on strength through the vigors of working the core by try different things can be just as beneficial.
I have not seen is show, but I do have the season on hold at my library to check out. I have started to follow him on Twitter and I also plan to start wearing bow ties.
In the end I found this more of an entertaining sports read than anything else. I enjoyed each chapter. I walked away with the idea that the journey is far more important than the destination which is a great reminder for anyone who is striving to accomplish a goal in their life.

I am not a professional athlete. Most of us aren't. But I played varsity sports in high school and still try to stay as active as I can as an adult. "The Sportsman" was able to appeal to that part of me that's always looking for new ways to challenge myself physically. It also appeals to the part of me that wants to see the world. Part autobiography, part travel guide, part health magazine, this book was a page turner from beginning to end.

to start with i am female 58yrs old and a football junkie. i was the daughter my dad never had. this book was purchased for me by my gentleman freind. sometimes i'm a little miffed about his gifts, but i had watched dhani's show on the travel channel and i enjoyed it a lot. this is the kind of book i enjoy, because it brings me closer to different cultures. the book gave me insight to how other sports are played and the extent of what the body and mind has to accomplish in order to play a sport. the book also gives a bit of history to the countries he visited. i was amazed in a great way, how gifted dhani is. he is a remarkable human. i have great respect for what he has accomplished and only wish i had the disipline he has in his life. this is an outstanding book. i think parents should request there children male and female to read this book.
thank you, jackie bates lexington, ky

This is a very interesting and positive read.

Dhani Jones, NFL linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals, was host of the Travel Channel show "Dhani Tackles the Globe," in which he would travel to a country and not only learn and compete in that country's national sport, but also explore the culture of the country. With sports ranging from Muay Thai kickboxing in Bangkok, to cycling in the Italian Alps, to Scottish Highland Games, to attempting to climb Mt. Everest in Nepal, Dhani would have one week to learn a new sport and compete at a high level. (Technically, Mt. Everest took more than a week).

This book presents lessons Dhani learned from his globe-hopping experiences, not only about the countries visited, but about how his own life was impacted both personally and professionally. Told in a chronological order, the book follows Dhani's football career and challenges, as well as how he managed to juggle an NFL career and host his show.

The book is a very thoughtful and insightful tale of self-examination as well as an inspiring journey. It is well written and engaging. Viewers of the show will note that the prose is very similar to Dhani on the show, and will be able to hear Dhani's voice as if he is speaking to them. People who have never seen the show will want to.

Dhani's intelligent journey is very relateable, and it's nice to read a story about a human who happens to be a pro athlete, rather than just an athlete wrapped up in his own stardom and importance. Once you read this, you will not only be ready to travel to a new location, you will look forward to exploring the cultures and people who call that place home.
