Many Captain Beefheart fans consider the years 1972 - 1977 as a kind of "middle period" for the Captain and his captive band. During these years, leader Don Van Vliet diverged from his former jaw-dropping rhythmic experimentation and tried something "more accessible." According to many reports, he did so under no pressure from the music industry or his management. It was apparently a personal decision. True, his previous two albums, "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" and "Trout Mask Replica" have the potential to frighten off the musically squeamish, but they remain some of the most ingenious and adventurous music ever captured on mass-produceable media. Nothing like it has appeared, before or since, in rock music. The often haughty term "art" seems to fit it appropriately. And we all know that art pays as well as selling popsicles to penguins.

Some who were there claim that the sudden change in style resulted from Van Vliet's marriage and the related urge to actually make some money. Others claim that Van Vliet was talked into it by those who said he should go back to "singing the blues." The rumor mill pours on, but, regardless of the reasons, an undeniable change in musical style definitely occurred on Captain Beefheart's 1972 album, "The Spotlight Kid." This remains his first 1970s foray into accessibility and it by no means represents his worst attempt. Nonetheless, in comparison to his previous releases, this album seems lackluster and a little plodding. The rhythm and pace barely seem to vary from track to track. At times its almost feels like one long connected song. Still, the album delivers on many levels and contains many great moments. For Beefheart, though, it stands as a good and not a great collection of songs. And whether it actually came out "more accessible" remains a question.
