Book Description

THE ST. PETERSBURG CONFESSIONS is a gripping tale that clocks in at a little over 20,000 words or 110 pages long. It is also the prequel to the character Ghostface in STROGANOV.

"I have sins to confess."
"Tell me, what evil have you done?"

It's St. Petersburg, right before the fall of Communism. Father Fedor, an Orthodox priest at St. Catherine's Cathedral, is locking up after the late night mass when he hears a stranger's voice call out to him. The man begs to confess immediately, afraid that if he waits he will become a lost soul.

Of course Father Fedor accepts, but what he doesn't know, what he isn't expecting, is that this madman has committed the same sin ninety-nine times.

The characters lacked depth and seemed mechanical. EllaMinnowPea  |  2 reviewers made a similar statement
Why 4 stars - because I can't give it 4.5 on this site and the ending was a bit too quick for me. Bill Thibadeau  |  1 reviewer made a similar statement

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Ty Hutchinson Triumph June 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't understand the negative reviews I have seen on this book. I found it to be most interesting and unexpected. The book, while short, compacts a lot of interesting characters into the story. This is only the second Ty Hutchinson novel that I have read. I believe him to be a author with some humor and an interest to not follow paths in his writing. I am reading Stroganov right now and fine the writing to be very entertaining. Try it - you should like it.

Why 4 stars - because I can't give it 4.5 on this site and the ending was a bit too quick for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time April 6, 2012

It's hard to see what others found appealing in this tedious narrative. The book opens with a priest giving his confession to another priest. The rest of the story involves "his" story/confession. In it he relates how a mysterious penitent shows up each night at his church to make his confession. Fr Fedor is mystified as to how this person gains access to the sanctuary without his knowledge and his own inability to deal with the impact of his heinous sins: mass murder. Night after night he is burdened by "ghost's" (for that is what he names himself) confessions while at the same time dealing with his daughter's entanglements with the Soviet police as she edits a "freedom" newspaper. The story races along at breakneck speed until the climax which is a drastic turn of events; one not easily foreseen.

As a short story I suppose it has some merit. The author is able to create a sense of foreboding and suspense albeit the main characters are hardly developed in a novella as brief as this one. Be warned that there are some graphic descriptions of both sexual acts and violence as the penitent describes his crimes to the priest. In point of fact, I could not see any benefit for the need to be quite this sensationalist. To each his own I suppose.

In short, I did not enjoy the book but completed it since it was such a short read (a couple of hours should do it for the average reader). I did not recommend the story to my wife nor would I recommend it to my friends. I simply could find no redeeming qualities in the book. In fact, at times it "felt" as though I were reading something written by a high school student as an assignment. There are far better suspense and mystery writers out there. For those interested in a little education along with great mystery, try the Rabbi mysteries (see my other reviews). Here we have well developed characters, interesting plot development and yet there is no need to sensationalize with gratuitous violence.

Congratulations, another winner by author Ty Hutchinson. He has shown his great ability to write exciting stories in any venue and keep the reader turning the pages. The ending gives the reader a true sense of how powerful, or weak, the mind can be.

A good Short Story with an ending I didn't see coming. This story makes you think about how much influence can someone have over you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great
This book was easy to read and extremely interesting. I never thought I'd read a book about a priest that would entrap me but this one surely did.

4.0 out of 5 stars The St. Petersburg Confessions
An intriging tale that pushes you forward with each new twist and turn. A little slow in parts but perhaps that just my eagerness to view the conclusion.

Most days I'm a writer in the ad business. My work has appeared in all the major advertising award shows and reported on in publications like Advertising Age, Creativity, Communication Arts and Archive.

While advertising is a blast, I wanted to tell stories that were bigger. I've since created the Darby Stansfield thrillers and a few other pager turners. I've recently released Corktown, the first book in my new series featuring FBI Agent, Abby Kane. You can visit my blog at tyhutchinson.com for the latest on my books and what's going on in my head. I love hearing from my readers. Feel free to email at thutchinson @ me dot com
