Marvel really struck something with their various Dark Tower-based mini-series', and their collaboration with Stephen King continues with The Stand. Unlike Marvel's Dark Tower books, which detail the early days of Roland, The Stand: Captain Trips is a pretty straight-forward adaptation that manages to retain most of what made King's original tale so good in the first place. Captain Trips collects the first five issue mini-series, which details the outbreak of the killer plague and begins to flesh out pivotal characters such as Stu, Frannie, Larry, and Nick. Scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Marvel Knights 4, Dead of Night: Man-Thing, and also a writer for HBO's Big Love) and featuring spectacular artwork from Mike Perkins (Captain America) and colorist Laura Martin, The Stand: Captain Trips is plenty entertaining and leaves you begging for more. It doesn't strike the same chord or sense of wonderment that Peter David and Robin Furth's Dark Tower books do, but regardless of that, The Stand: Captain Trips is a wonderful take on King's classic. All in all, if you're a Stephen King and/or comic fan, then you already know that this hardcover is a must-have.

Who ever was the person who thought to put all the comics into one set was a great thinker. This is a great start to a wonderful story and the ideas that build on this base make a for a thought provoking adventure for all who read. The story is sound, the artwork is great. A wonderful collection in a great book. Ideal for anyone who is a fan of the story, the author or comics.

Captain Trips is an amazing first series in Marvel's adaptation of the Stephen King masterpiece, The Stand. I'm not even a comic book fan, but as a longtime reader of King, this project is a treat, and you don't have to be into comics to enjoy it. It's exciting to see so many of the characters and events illustrated for the first time, and Marvel doesn't skimp on the details. A full and faithful account of the novel's opening stages is presented in a captivating, cinematic style that achieves the same visual drama of a movie. The artwork can only be described with words like superb, fascinating, stunning, and others along those lines. Throw in world-class, too.

This five-issue collection introduces several elements of the story to come in future books. First, most of the main characters are established, including Stu, Fran, Harold, Larry, Nick, and the Dark Man, Randall Flagg. Next, the premise of the superflu is revealed, and the protagonists begin to cope with its devastating effects on themselves and the world around them. Lastly, the intensity this series will offer is displayed by some disturbing and graphic artwork, with the best examples being the full-page shot of Charles Campion's dead wife and baby in Chapter One, and the gunfight in Chapter Three where Lloyd sees his partner Poke's face obliterated by gun blasts.

The book closes with Randall Flagg levitating over a lonely highway as his powers strengthen, setting the stage for the story's main conflict between this demonic villain and the survivors of the flu. Captain Trips makes an excellent companion to Stephen King's novel, and, even though it only presents the first portion of it, I'd recommend that any fan of King or The Stand give this collection a try. I would expect most to be impressed enough to continue following the series, as Marvel really has done an outstanding job.
