Format: Hardcover
Large, expensive, photo packed book covering the history of Daimler Benz from the start (mid 1800s) until 1986. Published by Mercedes Benz of North America. Fairly accurate, interesting historical account of the world's finest cars. Includes info on Ferdinand Porsche who designed many cars for Daimler Benz. The author tends to awkwardly go back and forth between the histories of Benz and Daimler (before their union in 1926) but it is still a very desirable book for those interested in European automobile history.

A bit romantic, but nearly 30 years on this book is still useful as a resource for Daimler Benz history. If you are a fan of classic Mercedes Vehicles this book is one of the first book I would recommend. Its full of of images and covers a lot of ground with enough detail. The book naturally starts with the pursuit of Gottlieb Daimler in making an internal combustion engine that is efficient enough to power a vehicle while Carl Benz was independently working on his vehicle. It then follows the establishment of the two companies, their merger, product rationalization. The history is quite interesting in that Maybach, Horch, Porsche worked for Daimler and also shows the influence that the two companies had on the early automotive industry. As other reviewers note the book does focus on racing but there is plenty of information on passenger car development and innovation. And that the book was published by MBNA it does give some detail to how the brand in the USA with the development of American Mercedes as well as the establishment of MBNA. Even if you dont plan to read it cover to cover I'd say this is a great book for your automotive library

The book concentrates on early history and especially racing history. Unfortunately, little on the development of the passenger cars.
